The "I told yo so" crowd.
I really didn't need to hear this awful news as soon as I got out of bed. I was among those who voted for Edwards and his detractors are using this as an opportunity to say "I told you so" to his supporters.

Well, I still don't regret voting for him. The fact that this story broke out seven months after I voted for the man says nothing about my judgment in voting for him. Nobody is perfect. Eveyone has something to hide. Any politician can have an affair. For those of you who are trying to make his supporters feel bad for supporting him, just remember that the politicians you respect and admire may have something to hide as well. They all do.

This isn't to say I'm excusing what he did. This has been a terrible day for me and others and it's only just begun. To find out that someone you respected and admired did something like this is nothing short of a punch to the gut. Edwards' political career is dead now and rightfully so.

But for those of you who are gleeful about this and see this as a chance to rub it his supporters' faces, fuck off.

2. Unlike some who inherently believe the National Enquirer I still doubt their journalism creds.

4. Which is why I never believed them. So what, they were right? They're still sketchy.
At best.

6. Edwards' hubris led him to doubt them, too---right to the Beverly Hills Hilton.

And FOR THE RECORD: I was ALL FOR EDWARDS. I drove hours to meet him and get his autograph, shake his hand, and say, "God bless you, John."
I write not to gloat, but to say, some things just don't pass the get-real test---and his basement-bathroom denials didn't, for me.
Now I say, "God bless Elizabeth."

13. I can understand your dissapointment and
anger. That isn't the same as being "gleeful" about what has happened.

Elizabeth and the kids didn't need this in their lives.- and I'm sure John is not feeling very ok either. He can only be angry at himself, and that is the hardest anger to have to live with.

My heart aches for them all.

7. I did not believe the story when it first surfaced last fall, but
the whole hotel thing was really pushing the limits as to what they could get away with regarding libel.

5. From the messages I've read.....
The DUers who didn't like Edwards are talking about the times they were dumped on for saying negative things about him. If that had happened to me (which it didn't because I supported him) I would want to point that out too.

It's human to be happy when you discover you're right about not trusting someone. I was right about Bush when he first ran for Gov of TX and I still tell people "I TOLD YOU SO!".

14. i haven't posted a word about the Edward's affair or did an I told you so.
But you are right that it is tempting because I was one who was terrified Edwards might get the nomination early in the primaries and got attacked even though I always tried to be respectful in discussing why I went from early supporter to non-believer.

I don't blame any Edward's supporters for believing in him. He had the best progressive platform of all the candidates who had any chance. Most of us who were against him loved his platform, but we had trust issues and/or didn't think he was electable.

If there was a "We were right" thread just for my ilk that wouldn't be read by Edwards supporters I'd be there, but I take no joy in rubbing it in to his supporters, as I was one early, before the Haifa conference.

8. well, my own personal opinion about "I told you so's" that confirm
negative things is that the person rejoicing in 'being right' is a double loser-

First because they think the worst and not the best, and second because they are happy about something negative.

If we all lived the lives we expect others to, we'd be living in paradise- but that day isn't likely to come anytime soon- (though I'd welcome it if it did)

This is not something to feel 'gleeful' about.

peace~

12. yes I do- people are people
regardless of what 'political' stand they happen to hold, country they come from, flaws they have, age they are, religion they practice (or reject)-

Rejoicing in the troubles of other people is wrong. (IMO) I don't always feel the kind of deep sorrow for people that I don't admire or personaly "like"- but it's never good when people do foolish things, or suffer greatly.

We are all more alike than we want to admit or believe.

:hi:

10. It's funny how the "I told yo so" crowd seem to have a common favorite candidate ...
... and a common (and persistent) lament. The hypocrisy is stunning.

11. Today's "news" doesn't change anything in America, it's a mini-distraction.
I really liked Edwards because he went right after Bush in 2003 and wound up on Kerry's ticket as his veep.

Today's news doesn't change a damn thing, as far as I'm concerned.
This is a personal matter that John and Elisabeth have to work out for themselves.
I still like Edwards, and even though I wasn't one of his supporters I would have gladly jumped in with both feet to get him into the White House this year if he had been our nominee.

I don't know what Edwards will do now, but we still have to come together to defeat McCain in the fall.

John needs to work on repairing the damage to his marriage.
I don't know what his politicial future will be, but if Obama still chooses him to have him in his cabinet as the AG, or whatever other position, I will wholeheartedly back that decision.
