I stay awake at night thinking about the hell America will devolve into if John McCain gets in office

The next POTUS will replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg and John Paul Stevens, the two most liberal Justices on the Supreme Court. John McCain will replace these two Justices with two radical Christian fundamentalists and before you know it, we will cease to be America.

-Abortion will be ILLEGAL all over the country, except perhaps in California and New York. However, you can expect challenges in those states, violence against abortion doctors and clinics, and possibly a federal law to preempt those states and criminalize abortion.

- Womens rights will be reduced to the bare minimum. Equal pay challenges will be impossible to bring. Child care issues will be ignored (just pray, and everything will work out). There will be no right to contraceptives or other medical care attendant to reproductive care and no right to challenge insurance companies to pay for them.

- Gay rights will be nonexistent. The Christian fundies on the court will say these people have NO RIGHT to anything, marriage, equal treatment because of their sexual orientation or identification, and no right to serve in the military, or even be recognized as families by the state.

- Immigrants will be shunned and treated as second class citizens, only useful for their labor, exploited for cheap labor to the benefit of corporations.

- African Americans and other minorities will be further denied equal rights in a variety of situations. Institutional barriers and abuses in our justice system will go unfixed and exacerbated. What these people think is cruel and unusual punishment will be exactly nothing. The State will be able to use as much force as they deem necessary and there won't be a damn thing you can do about it.

- Civil Rights will be a thing of the past. The State will have unlimited power to infringe on every Bill of Right which exists. There will be no 4th amendment right the State must observe as long as the State deems there is a threat to its existence. Therefore, a "threat" will be maintained as necessary to maintain this control. 8th amendment rights will be minimized...rape, burglary, and other non-murder crimes will be susceptible to what ever a state deems as a fair punishment. Particularly fundie southern states will start pushing for the death penalty is cases of rape, abortion, and who knows what else.

- Freedom of Religion will be a thing of the past. These Christian fundamentalist will see to it that every school has the Ten Commandments in every classroom and that prayer is conducted at the beginning of each class. Public money will be allocated for Religious schooling under the guise of "free choice" for schools.

- We will become a police state under Christian authority and because god told the President to "just do it".

- We will go to war with Iran, Venezuela, stay in Iraq & Afghanistan, do something stupid towards Russia by first isolating them, creating a revolution within Russia of anger towards America and possibly setting up a war between them and us.

- Nothing will be done to slow the course of Climate Change and we will cease to exists as we know it.

- Our dependence on oil will not be broken, but exacerbated to the point we would never be able to draw down and get off the oil drug.

- Unions and collective bargaining will be deemed unfair to business and a burden on the economy. It will cease to exist and corporations will be able to do as they please with workers as an excuse to keep business viable in America.

- More American jobs will be exported overseas and the government will subsidize it.

- Crucial social services will be cut or eliminated and millions of people will begin a free fall into dangerous territory. Healthcare will only be for the privileged. Prescription medication will be un-affordable and subsidized by our tax dollars.

- Social Security and Medicaid will be privatized, cut, or eliminated, for tax breaks or "rebates" that don't cover the expenses.

- Our infrastructure will continue to crumble in the name of "lower taxes".

- School funding will be cut further and our kids will continue to fall behind in the world.

- The economy will be so shot, people will find it impossible to get a job. Crime will rise as a result and we will be living in a virtual hell. The privileged and elite will be protected behind gated communities on the tops of hills, surrounded by police, Blackwater, and other security forces so that the hungry masses can't interrupt their teas and golf games.

- diseases will find no cure do to the government's ban on stem cell research. AIDS will destroy half the population due to nothing being done about it.

This is just part of what keeps me up.

Reagan did to the US... I can't even wrap my head around those things yet.

It is all about the Supreme Court and foreign policy. I wish that the American public paid more attention to the former - - as you did, very eloquently. Thank you.

(Incidentally, I believe abortion would be legal in virtually every reliably "blue" state. There is no way, for example, that Massachusetts, Illinois or New Jersey would outlaw reproductive choice. But that doesn't reduce the power or importance of your statement. Thank you again. K & R.
