Gah. The McCain ads just keep getting worse.
Who's producing these pieces of crap - third-graders?

If I had to put my name on these ads, I swear I'd shoot myself first. They're that bad.

2. Laugh all you want, but the idea may be effective with the American voters.
Yeah, it isn't true, but when has that mattered in election results?

It's now conventional wisdom that McCain is the experienced guy who has an unquestionable advantage on foreign policy and "defense" issues in a tense time. If the corporate media and McCain can do a good enough job getting the American public to see Obama as lacking substance (when of course McCain is the one who lacks all substance and credibility), than McCain may be able to claw his way to a win.

Remember, this is the same media who convinced the public that Bush won "on substance" (and often style as well) in all head-to-head debates in '00 and '04. The substantive reality has little impact on voting habits in America.

3. Hasn't worked yet.
When McCain first started running these ads, Obama held an average lead of 46.5, 43.3 according to http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/general_election_mccain_vs_obama-225.html">RealClearPolitics. Two weeks later, in fact, exactly two weeks (Monday, July 28th was when McCain began his assault), Obama leads McCain, on average, 46.8 to 42.0.

That is a .8 increase for Obama and a one point loss for McCain. So in total, Obama is +1.8 or so since McCain began his assault.

It didn't work.

5. Well, here's a BIG difference for you.
In 2000 and 2004, Republicans were all down with Bush's campaign style and campaign ads.

This year? Not so much. The Republicans I've talked to (and I talk to a bunch of 'em in my line of work) are all scratching their heads trying to figure out what McCain's getting at with these ads.

A direct quote from a conservative owner of an ad agency who I do sub-work for: 'If someone in my house was producing those ads, the ads would never get out the door, and whoever was responsible for the ads would be fired without recommendation.'

I'm starting to think McCain hired a bunch of College Republicans as his ad agency. They are, without a doubt, the dumbest political ads I've ever seen - and I've been watching political campaigns since 1960.

4. Let me get this straight....
People rejected the idea that there were racial undertones to the Paris/Britney/Phallic symbols ad because connecting white women to a black man wasn't used in a sexual way like the Harold Ford ads were.

So what does the McCain camp do? They try again. They create a new ad where white women are talking about how attractive they think Obama is and they're claiming it's still a "celebrity" theme? This is the race card folks. This is their attempt at a swiftboat.
