Why would Obama's campaign "head fake"us on Clark?
Here's what I don't get: why would the campaign spend time and effort trying to mislead us on Clark with the whole "Securing America" thing (sorry if I didn't get the wording just right) for Wednesday night at the Convention?

Am I the only one who is confused about this? Why would they spend energy on it, anyway? Just don't say anything and then announce and that's that! What's wrong with doing it that way?

I'm not getting the rationale here. Help me out...

Even if it is a clue, it could be a lot of other candidates with military background.

18. When you pick a PAC name so generic that its almost meaningless
then yes, it could very well be a coincidence. Heck, I take back what I wrote about it being military. The phrase could apply to anything at all.

21. The PAC name is WesPac.
Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 07:29 PM by Sparkly
The website is securingamerica.com.

"Securing America's Future" isn't "so generic that's it's almost meaningless," any more than the other carefully-crafted themes are. Simple combinations of words are the most carefully designed.

Edited for absolute clarity: Look at the words right beside "WesPAC." http://securingamerica.com/

4. Wishful thinking on our part.
It could be Obama's campaign has no intention of misleading us. Perhaps they simply liked Clark's slogan and decided to use it on Wednesday? It really doesn't mean anything unless we want it to, and I admit I want it to.

5. They're probably not head faking us.
They may simply have liked the phrase "Securing America's Future" (which is pretty generic) and not realized people might associate it with Clark.

And they probably weren't head faking us on Kaine or Bayh either. I think people are a bit over-excited and jumping to conclusions.

7. I felt like the Kerry campaign did that
Maybe I'm nuts and it was my wishful thinking, but it was said that their location -- shortly before announcing the pick -- was a clue. They were on or near the Lewis and Clark Trail. (No connection to Edwards ever materialized that I know of.)

That and the scheduling -- that all other former candidates had canceled speeches for the day except the VP pick, and Clark was the only one scheduled to give a speech -- made me think they'd picked him, then changed their minds at the last second for whatever reason.

8. Would the convention planners even know who the VP pick is yet?
It might be that they want to talk about prosperity one day and security the next because those are important domestic and international themes.

9. I don't know either.
They could have come up with a different phrase such as "A Secure America" or something similar. "Securing America's Future" is associated with Clark, so I find it interesting to say the least.

13. Yep, on vacation starting on Wednesday, so I'll have to see ya after that.
I'll be checking in just to read what's going on, but not logging in, since I'll have to do this from local libraries in the communities I'll be in.

The break will be nice. But I'll still be looking in for what I can find out on political news.

Sorry. I am a political junkie. I'm bad.

19. Hi Laura!
I'll be on the Door Peninsula in northern Wisconsin. It is a lovely community of art lovers and many, many liberals (lots from Madison) on Lake Michigan. Nice up there.

29. Our house is in Egg Harbor, which I'm sure you visited.
We are on Lost Lake. It is very quiet, secluded. It makes for a relaxing, laid back vacation. I can take about a week and a half of it, then I'm ready to go home. Hubby would stay there if he could. He goes up a little earlier than I. We have season tickets to the symphony, which we both enjoy tremendously. We're also going to the Birch Creek Jazz festival and a round of the galleries to see their current exhibits. It's a great arts place.

12. You elevate the status of people who are considered for VP, even it they are not chosen.
Clark will end up with a Cabinet position (assuming he wants one) so you may as well float his name out there for VP so he is more of a heavyweight later.

Seems like the veep could be Clark, but the clue is too obvious for the campaign.

Ordinary folks won't make the connection. I think they've done it on purpose - given us a clue on purpose.

23. If they're NOT going to give Clark a prominent role- it would be pretty f'd up to use that term
Obama could be accused of plagarism unless Clark was behind Obama using that terminology.

A simple google search turns up plenty of other uses, including this one (link) by McSame himself.

33. Clark is not the only one using this. It is a pretty common theme among Democrats,
Clark's faithfuls know it is the name of his PAC, but most Dems and most Americans in general do not.
