re: WHY are people SO afraid of Obama???!!!
I just realized why. Because this time around, it's truly all the opposition has. No one is too keen on McCain, and the GOP is aware that the enthusiasm is all on Obama's side--and enthusiasm translates into turnout.

So they figure the ONLY way a Conservative would possibly rush to the polls and cast a vote for McCain is if they were scared to death of Obama taking over. Maybe. So that's where it's coming from, and from the looks of it, it doesn't seem to be working too well at the moment.

2. What show was that? Don't celebrate christmas or birthdays--that seems REALLY
easy to disprove. It's like they're not trying anymore...

4. From their comments about not buying lots of gifts at holidays...
...different from not celebrating these holidays at all.

I'm sorry I don't have a link to a story handy, but I remember reading that and really respecting that they celebrate with the kids, but don't follow the "commercialized" and "consumeristic" modern form of celebrating.

I applaud their ability to de-vulgarize holidays, but I guess it scares some folks.

5. Hey, not going into debt to buy your kids more stuff than they'll ever
play with is unAmurkin.

But the OP raises a valid point: The hysteria is so at variance with the person we actually see that it truly calls for an explanation.

6. Buying shit that one year later, one has to give away or put up in a
Target storage bin never to be seen again till 10 years later.

I started out buying my daughters so many gifts till it wasn't even funny. Then one day the oldest one (who must have been eight or so) said...."hey, how come she got 28 boxes and I only got 27 boxes?" inquiring about her younger sister's Christmas haul. That stopped me dead in my holiday tracks! I had done this because I hadn't been quite that fortunate, and I guess I figured that they should be. but I realized then that what I was doing was creating little monsters.

They were not so much into what they got, but the fact that they got a lot. It wasn't anything inside that got them excited, it was simply opening up boxes after boxes after boxes. After that, Christmas changed in my household. They started getting like 4 gifts each at the most, if that....

I never regretted, and I never looked back.

Edited on Wed Aug-13-08 03:43 AM by rebel with a cause
There was the year my son got the He Man set of toys, all set up on the coffee table (by Santa) like a real battle. Another year it was GI Joes. And no, he is not violent and is anti-war like his mother (me), but he was taught the difference between make-believe and the real thing.

Then there was the year that my daughter got notes left on the tree and she had to find her gifts where they were hidden all through the house. I never spent a lot on their gifts, but bought wisely, made what I could, and made the experience as fun as I could for them. My then-husband had never had things like this when he was young, and he enjoyed the gift getting as much as they did. Too bad his joy didn't last, but turned to abusive behavior by the afternoon. Another reason I tried so hard to make their part of the day special.

8. Instead of birthday gifts
They give the girls sleep overs with their friends. Evidently they spend hundreds of dollars on these festivities. At least that is what I remember the story saying.

Not sure what they do for Christmas.
