Did McCain Violate The Logan Act By Sending His Own "Delegation" To Georgia?

Seems to me he and Leiberman and Graham have not only stepped out of the bounds of their role in the Senate, they might potentially be breaking a law.

The Logan Act is a United States federal law that forbids unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments. It was passed in 1799 and last amended in 1994. Violation of the Logan Act is a felony, punishable under federal law with imprisonment of up to three years.

The text of the Act is broad and is addressed at any attempt of a US citizen to conduct foreign relations without authority. However, there is no record of any convictions or even prosecutions under the Logan Act

codel, same as Obama's recently. Good old Lieberman makes it bipartisan, officially at least.

but as you well know, he caucuses with the dems, chairs a committee, etc. As to how codels are authorized, I have no idea, but what you say makes sense. If they go by armed forces, it would have to be Levin who is pretty no nonsense and I guess not easily intimidated. Maybe Lieberman can authorize it himself? We shall see....

And has repeatedly referred to statements and promises by John McCain. Thus, this goes beyond a mere fact finding mission.

12. since you asked: the answer is no.
Not unless, of course, every other time a member of Congress has met with a foreign leader violated the Logan Act, which of course is not the case.

I hope McCain gets slammed for being presumptuous but trying to make this out to be a violation of the Logan Act is silly.
