Obama is leading McCain in the red state of (gasp!) ...ALASKA !!!
First of all.. I'm in Anchorage and there are literally Obama signs all over the place. He has two campaign offices in the city of Anchorage, and 4 others in other locations throughout the state.

Like a few other western states have said.. there are no McCain signs to be found anywhere, and the only Republican who still has quite a few signs up is Ron Paul.

In any event - latest poll:

Alaska: Could it truly be a swing state between McCain and Obama?

The Tickets begs your indulgence; we are absolutely enthralled by the prospect of a barn-burner of a presidential race in Alaska. And although it's only August, a new poll suggests that such a prospect has a chance of becoming reality.

The survey by the Anchorage-based Hays Research Group on Aug. 6 and 7 found Barack Obama -- improbably to us -- leading John McCain, 45% to 40%, in the fight for Alaska's 3 electoral votes (which haven't gone to a Democratic presidential candidate since Lyndon Johnson in his 1964 landslide).

True, the survey has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.9 percentage points. And precedent argues that the Land of the Midnight Sun will revert to its true-red Republican form as election day nears.

But when we asked the poll's veteran research director, Anne Hays, when she last recalled anything as seemingly competitive as this year's presidential matchup appears to be in the state, she paused and said, "I don't think I was in business then."

And asked if she thought that competitiveness would be sustained into November, she replied, "I think we're definitely in play."

Obama, Hays said, is benefiting in part from scandals that have rocked Republicans -- the state's dominant political players -- in recent years. The spotlight on these miscues intensified recently with the indictment of Alaska's numero uno Republican, Sen. Ted Stevens, on federal charges related to a corruption probe.

In other Alaskan news.. the Republican mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska endorses Obama ...

Republican Alaska mayor endorses Democrat Obama for president

Associated Press - August 12, 2008 8:34 PM ET

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Republican Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Jim Whitaker says Democrat Barack Obama is the best man to be this country's next president.

Whitaker discussed his decision today (Tuesday) to back someone from another party.

He says he likes Obama's energy plan that includes developing renewable and alternative sources.

The state receives nearly 90% of its revenue from oil production.

Whitaker says he's not breaking ranks from the Republican party. Rather, he's simply backing the person he believes is best suited for the job.

Obama defeated Hillary Clinton in the February Super Tuesday caucus.

McCain finished fourth behind Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul in the GOP contest that same day.

1. I hope Obama makes a quick trip up there and forces McCain to start travelling to red states.

I know that the staffs at his two offices in Anchorage are hoping he swings through here on his way back down to the Lower-48 states..

If he stops here to refuel.. .. he'll be BOMBARDED with supporters!!!

6. and McCain would be forced to go there to.

I hope his first day back he goes Alaska, Idaho, Arizona and Nevada and starts to wear down McCain physically.

2. Heh. I've been a proponent of the Go West, Young Man strategy for awhile....
I didn't really think Alaska would be a pickup opportunity though, until Stevens went down on charges.

Still for Schweitzer for VP candidate, furthering the Go West theme, and also change.

People up there are fed up with the corrupt republicans.. the Murkowskis, the Stevens..the whole bunch of them..

Alaska should be an easy state.. very low population, and Obama's got plenty of money to spend there.. The indigenous population should be behind him as well..

I see this map:..conservatively...

NOTICE THAT I LEFT OFF: MI, OH, PA (AND ITHINK HE WILL GET AT LEAST ONE OF THEM

5. Wow. That map looks awesome.. I'm still hoping too that we..
..somehow pick up North Carolina. The polls don't look great.. but who knows? Bill Schneider said polls that include college students will start coming out within another 6 weeks or so... and we all know that NC has tons of students for Obama!

I agree with you too that Obama will get one (or maybe even two) of those 3 states you selected; MI, OH, & PA.

Hell. We could be surprised and get all three of them..

Also.. I think if the Obama team and Governor Schweitzer jump on these bogus hunting allegations right away, that Obama has a good shot at Montana.

8. Naw ...
Pa is safe ...

I think Michigan is the key state, if he holds there, he is going to win ...

I think he should compete, but Ga and NC aren't going to happen, and he is going to win Pa and Michigan before he wins Va or Co ... Serously, KERRY won Pa and Michigan, and VA and Col have not voted D in the presidential in ages ...

It would help if he does cherry picks a couple smaller states like Alaska ...

7. McCain is an 80/20 favorite in Alaska
That's the betting line.

Unfortunately for me, fellow bettors are aware that polling is known to err in the same direction in certain states. Alaska is one of them. The Democrat is always overstated by at least 4 points in statewide polls.

Sites like 538 are incredibly clueless in that regard. They spit out current polls with no idea of past trends. I'd love to bet on McCain at even money or anything close to that in Alaska, hell even giving 2/1 odds, but the sharp speculators keep the odds high.

Same thing in Georgia. That state always polls too favorably to Democrats so the bettors really don't care about small margins.
