Barack and Hillary are united. We should be, too.
The MSM will attempt to paint it in a negative light by saying that their unity shows something bad about one or both Barack and Hillary. No need to regurgitate their talking points here.

But what we must do is turn this around. Barack is strong enough to include a former rival's supporters in what will be an historic convention. He is confident enough in his positions, knowing that Hillary's issues are also his issues. He is gracious enough to honor his closest competitor. He is smart enough to know that this party must come together.

Hillary is strong enough to work hard for Obama's election. She is confident enough to appear on the national stage even after a hard loss, knowing that Obama's issues are her issues. She is gracious enough to support him and to tell her followers to do the same thing. She is smart enough to know that her future and the future of the party depend on unity.

For anyone who is still a bit nervous about how this will play out, remember this:

On a practical note, of course Bill Clinton, as the most recent democratic president, would speak at the convention. He was a wildly successful president in trying circumstances. So, how could the convention ignore his wife, who came in second during the primaries? We cannot make Hillary the name that must not be spoken. Just think about how uncomfortable that would be. And just think of the reactions that her strongest supporters would have if her name were verboten. The party would look fearful and weak if Hillary were excluded. And if there were merely a token mention of her candidacy, it would certainly be pointed out as exactly that. We would still look fearful and weak. And, worst of all, Obama would appear to be arrogant and ungracious. He is neither of those things.

In the face of these facts, the best way to handle it is to embrace Hillary completely, give her her due respect, celebrate her with abandon. Obama is meeting this challenge head on and he is even raising the ante. And Hillary is fully supportive of Obama. She is being true to her word. She is campaigning for him. She is voting for him at the convention.

At times I have asked what would please Hillary supporters. As everyone here knows, I am an ardent Obama supporter. Now I had to ask myself what would please ME. I must hold myself to the same standard to which I hold former Hillary supporters. Therefore I am VERY pleased with how the convention is turning out. I am VERY pleased with uniting the party. I will watch Bill and Hillary and Chelsea and be happy about it. Because this is what we all wanted: Unity.

I'm tired of the fighting and slick remarks. I hope this ends when the Convention does but I don't see it ever ending.

28. All I can say is this:
When Clinton told me to support Obama, I reluctantly agreed.

But as Obama continues to show a gracious attitude toward Clinton and her supporters, I become more and more reconciled, not quite enthusiastic, but not filled with the despair I felt in June.

I am now willing to donate to his campaign and depending on the VP choice, (it doesn't have to be Clinton! Just someone I can get behind. NOT a Republican.) I find myself thinking of actually working with the campaign.

What I am saying, I guess, is that Obama and the Clintons' example of unity makes me feel more hopeful. If such fierce rivals can come together like this, there is nothing we can't do. I am looking forword to his book with interest.

More importantly, I am looking forward to the most rocking Democratic convention in history where Obama becomes our official nominee! I can't imagine a more exciting, energizing event. Whoo Hoo!

30. Yes! I am happy too.
This is going to be a historic convention all around.

Gail Collis wrote a good op-ed in the NYT.

"...Seriously — good work, Democrats. There is no greater achievement than the nonviolent resolution of differences, and we’ll take it on whatever level we can get it. Organizing a harmonious convention is not exactly a new Middle East roadmap. But like all settlements between enemy forces, it required leaders who were willing to forego the temptation to appear tough at all times, and followers prepared to get over it, whatever historical wound “it” happens to represent. For an example of a situation in which both these factors are AWOL, see the current conflict in Georgia..."

I agree- we must come together and turn our anger outwards, directly towards the neocons.

There can be only one. Either would have been historic. This convention will history in the making. Barriers broken.

I will watch the convention with pride in our Party just as I know you would be if the runner up had won.

42. Thank you Marrah. That means a lot to me. And absolutely I
would feel the same way if the outcome had been different. We should feel so much pride that we had so many great candidates instead of griping about little things that don't matter a bit anymore.

And both Barack and Hillary have shown such good character. We should be flat out amazed and in awe. Then we should emulate them and work our butts off to defeat McCain.

41. Great post!!!!!
And I'd like to say that many, many of the posts that claim to be supportive of Obama are painting him as weak and foolish, on the verge of being smote by the evil Clinton...none of these posts seem to paint either one of them as good candidates or capable people.
Those wanting to make division are on the same side-McCains- be they posters of venom toward Hillary or posters of the PUMA variety. Same end results, same objectives. Those starting the fights are the same, no matter the rhetorical plumage they might fly. The 'good cop' and the 'bad cop' are on the same team.
Anyone not celebrating the Convention we are about to hold is simply working against the universal Demcratic goal of electing our nominee, Senator Barack Obama, to the office of President of the Unitied States of America.
