While discussing ABBA, McCain manages to bring up his military service
ASPEN, Colorado (CNN) – ABBA might be one of the world’s most-ridiculed pop acts, but at long last, John McCain is rising to their defense.

Speaking to Walter Isaacson at the Aspen Institute in Colorado on Thursday, McCain found himself explaining a recent interview with Blender Magazine in which he selected ABBA’s 1976 track “Dancing Queen” as his favorite song.

“What were you thinking?,” Isaacson asked him, looking incredulous.

“If there is anything I am lacking in, I’ve got to tell you, it is taste in music and art and other great things in life,” McCain joked. “I’ve got to say that a lot of my taste in music stopped about the time I impacted a surface-to-air missile with my own airplane and never caught up again.”

+++++++++++

Is there any subject McCain can discuss without bringing up his military service?

2. For once I have to agree with McCain.
"One of the world’s most-ridiculed pop acts"? How absurd. They are well respected by anyone who knows anything about music. Plus, you know, the MILLIONS of people who have seen Mamma Mia on stage and screen. I don't get why people harp on the ABBA thing. Apart from the irony that a Republican likes such gay friendly music.

15. Actually, they ARE "one of the world’s most-ridiculed pop acts"...
And rightfully so.
Their music royally sucks!
But the truth is, we love 'em anyway!

Speaking of sublimely sucky, are you familiar with Dschinghis Khan?

4. But isn't it even more swell...
...that we could end up with a President who has no "taste in music and art and other great things in life"? Just what the country needs, another philistine who'll suck money out of the arts and give it to Blackwater and KBR.

5. "Dancing Queen" came out in 1976. McCombover was a POW from 69-73.
So shouldn't his "musical taste" be frozen in time as of 1969? He should be stuck on the Stones' "Let It Bleed," not f&cking ABBA.

6. You're absolutely right.
Jesus. Even when he's pretending to be self-deprecating, he's an asshole.

7. I heard he's stealing their "music"
Just like he's stealing Jackson Browne's music. When is McCain going to pay these people?
Just a footnote. I don't like ABBA all that much either.

8. Man, this is beautiful
Can you imagine watching him make what he thinks are sly references to his military service over and over again during the debates, in lieu of answering questions? And putting a button on each one with that creepy little chuckle he uses to distract from the fact that he's grinding his teeth in fury at the slightest suggestion that he isn't entitled to do whatever he wants? It's going to be a train wreck.

10. "Hank's wife!!"
One of my grown sons was the first person I know who made that comparison. He told me last year "you know who McCain really reminds me of? Cotton Hill."

It is a great comparison. Short, short fuse, crazy.

"Money, money, money
Must be funny
In the rich mans world
Money, money, money
Always sunny
In the rich mans world
Aha-ahaaa
All the things I could do
If I had a little money
Its a rich mans world"

14. I liked that song's progressive tone
ABBA was a secret guilty pleasure, sorta like watching Melrose Place.

12. "I impacted a surface-to-air missile with my own airplane"
So he hit the missile and the missile didn't hit him?
Think about it, that's what he said plus "I never caught up again'
Caught up with up? Reality?

13. heh, David Shuster pointed out that the timing for his justification is way off too
sadly, the clip of McCain talking about his love for Abba was probably the most animated and passionate that I have ever seen him.
