Here's your headline: McCAIN OPPOSES ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES
Life begins at conception. He was unequivocal. Direct.

The pill prevents implantation, not contraception.

If you are on the pill, you may be having monthly abortions, according to Senator McCain.

Therefore Mr. Straight Talk just said the pill should be illegal. As should the Patch, the Ring and Mirena.

Spread the word.

McCain is warning all you dirty sluts and horny bastards, married or not, not to have sex unless you plan on bearing and raising a child to adulthood. Or you will be committing an illegal act.

1. Oral contaceptives cause oral sex, right?
That's what Mommy says. And Mommy protects me as long as I live here in the basement.

4. Colorado Voters Will Be Asked When 'Personhood' Begins
Edited on Sat Aug-16-08 09:29 PM by eleny
I live in Colorado and I dread this. They got twice the number of signatures for it so opposing groups didn't even contest the signatures.

"LOS ANGELES -- A proposal to define a fertilized human egg as a person will land on Colorado's ballot this November, marking the first time that the question of when life begins will go before voters anywhere in the nation."

5. Even if it passes, it'll fail constitutional muster
once it's challenged - probably by Planned Parenthood or Colorado NARAL - they're pretty good in challenging stupid shit like that.

We'll see if it fails (which I probably predict will)

Oh, and I didn't check Initative 100 back home in Denver (still in NY till Monday night) - did it pass or fail? I hope as hell it failed big time - it looked like it was winning.

7. Oral contraceptives prevent ovulation. Plan B prevents ovulation, fertilization and...
...possibly, implantation.

10. actually, ovulation occasionally occurs with oral contraceptives
My fundie stepmom has been insisting for years that the pill causes abortions. Her church told her.

here's the info:

http://www.oralcontraceptives.com/about_cvc.asp

How Do Oral Contraceptives Prevent Pregnancies?

Oral contraceptives employ synthetic hormones that mimic the properties of natural estrogens and/or progesterone to "fool" the female reproductive system. They provide constant levels of an estrogen and/or progestin in the blood, thus suppressing the release of both FSH and LH. Suppression of FSH inhibits maturation of an egg in an ovary. Suppression of LH inhibits release of an egg from the ovary. In addition to the inhibition of ovulation, the constant level of an estrogen and progestin in the body cause insufficient thickening of the endometrium, which prevents attachment of the egg. Progestins also promotes production of thick, opaque mucus, which acts as a barrier to sperm, as sperm can only pass through clear, thin mucus. Progestin is also thought to produce changes in the fallopian tubes that impede movement of the egg toward the uterus. Estrogen and progestin may also alter the pattern of muscle contractions in the tubes and uterus. This effect may interfere with implantation. In case ovulation does occur, which is rare but can happen, these additional effects also help to prevent pregnancies.

12. No contraceptive is 100% effective, but it also looks like that information is incorrect...
Edited on Sat Aug-16-08 11:08 PM by Kristi1696
Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum, the remnant of the dominant follicle that releases the egg. While progesterone may inhibit fertilization as your source noted, it is actually REQUIRED for successful implantation as it is crucial for proliferation of endometrial tissue. The levels of progesterone found in oral contraceptives should not be high enough to cause uterine contractions sufficient enough to prevent implantation (unless one were to take a bunch of pills). In fact, many women take oral contraceptives to prevent painful cramps caused by such contractions.

So the final result with oral contraceptives is:
Goal is to prevent ovulation = no destruction of "life"
May also prevent fertilization = no destruction of "life"
Should not prevent implantation = no destruction of "life"

Plan B, on the other hand, has tremendous amounts of progestins, therefore DOES cause uterine contractions, which may interfere with implantation.

ETA: To be fair, there are different formulations of oral contraceptives ranging from estrogen-dominant (old school) to progesterone-dominant (new school). I was speaking about progesterone-dominant pills.

11. Actually, McInsane, life begins before conception.
There is no possible way that a child can be conceived with a dead sperm and egg. I'm tired of everyone allowing these asshats to get away with framing this issue in this way. If John is so concerned about murdering children, he shouldn't have been womanizing. Because every time he did he killed millions of babies. :sarcasm:

John is arbitrarily setting what is believes to be when life begins. Note that it only happens when the woman becomes responsible for his sperm. But he ignores that fact that these babies' cells were alive even before conception. So his definition is demonstrably wrong. It is a religious definition but it is scientifically unsound. Any law written to say that it does is basically a violation of separation of church and state. Not to mention moronic and factually untrue.

I believe it begins before conception, because it does. So now do I get to cram my views down McSame's throat? NO MORE SEX John Boy!
