So, when is the Forum on Science scheduled?
You know.. to discuss things like Global Climate Change, Energy Policy, Teaching Creationism in public schools, our failing Infrastructure, Stem Cell Research, NASA Funding Etc. Etc. Etc.

Moderated by am accomplished scientist

Isn't that next week??? Or maybe right after the conventions?????

1. The forum on science will occur
Right before the alarm clock goes off.

Oh, you meant in actual waking life? Fat chance.

9. Actually that would be good for McCain so lets not do it
If he went to a science forum and spouted some fundie beliefs to the "egg heads" he'd become a hero and rally the base.

10. Good point
It would just be an opportunity for straight-talking McSame to "put the intellectuals in their place" with some empty-headed fundie slogans and it would likely backfire big time.

Anti-intellectualism is practically a national obsession in this country. We've had 8 years of Bush - 'nuff said?

11. I have begged for this and scientist and technologist have too
Since the beginning of the debates in 2007. The questions shouldn't be left to just theologians.

Bill Nye the science guy would be good and respected by all.
This would up grade the dialogue for our national needs.

16. Well, he's OK with his astronomy but he is not enough
of a generalist on science that can take all fields
into the perspective that Bill can.

Bill reaches everyone and all aspects of science and technology.
He has talked to the greatest living scientist of the world in all
fields.

He is respected and a great role model that all families have
grown up with.

Besides the fundies hate him.

22. No, no, no,
Much better to charge people $2,000 each so a rich neocon Christ-less Christian Preacher can make money off of interviewing two presidential candidates.

Better to stack the deck and the crowd with crazy Pro-McInsane people and watch Obama squirm (though he didn't squirm, but people see what they want to see).

You know the Corporate media would never show the footage of any real science debate. It would be as if it never happened.

Sad as it is, the science and reason lobby just doesn't have as much sway as the batshit religion lobby.

Besides, as a couple people upthread pointed out, the US is so anti-intellectual, McCain would probably be able to rally his base off it.

33. Disagree
There are some faiths where the teachings are vastly more important than the historical accuracy of the account. For example, my own faith is Luciferian Satanism. The attributes most praised in our influential works (we don't have holy books in the normal sense) are compassion, justice and intellectual inquiry ("follow the truth always, no matter where it takes ye", TDA). Did Lord Lucifer exist? I believe so but ultimatly, it's irrelevant because even if he did not, the moral and ethical teachings would remain worthwhile. We don't dispute that Darwinian Evolution is more-or-less accurate (a couple of us in the field have quibbles with the specific details but that's quite normal for scientists). We don't fight science, we learn from it. I've used my own faith as an example here but there are others that this is true of such as some forms of Buddhism and even a couple of minor variants of Christianity.

But then there is the form of religion which is largely about a spiritual "get out of jail free" card which it's adherants tend to interpret as the freedom to behave badly in the here and now.

25. Most Americans would be lost.
I'm going to sound elitist by saying this but any serious scientific discussion on those topics will be far above the heads of most Americans.

There has been a concerted effort by Repblicans to dumb down the American public and they've done a good job. We have regressed as a country.

27. Good point, sad that the religious sect is so politically powerful now,
it means that we are on an economic downturn for sure. How can we compete with the hi tech world while being a theocracy??
Who else feels that this faith forum is a slap in the face for progressives? I feel really left out in the cold.

would be cool on whatever subejects of interest and concern. Reverend Whoever was better than most in the Corporate Media.

Science would be one I'd love to regularly explore with candidates. That would be an excellent window into the the mind and breadth of their vision.
