The election will be a guaranteed win/win for the military/industrial complex.

10. That kind of worries me. Its aimed at the base, not at expansion of the base.
If it is Gephardt, it means Obama is having a problem with working class types.

He should be able to get them with the economy, but I think Krugman is right that Obama hasn't shown chops on that area yet. Which is another source of worry.

12. I'll bet you a signature for a week you're wrong.
Edited on Mon Aug-18-08 08:40 AM by TexasObserver
The bet:

You lose: You have a signature for 7 days that says "I bet with Texas Observer about politics, and I lost."

You win: I have a signature for 7 days that says "I bet with Unsane about politics, and I lost."

The bet gets paid as soon as we know who the VP really is.

DEAL ... OR NO DEAL?

21. OK! You're it, Clifford!
You know I'm gonna win this one!!

I like Dick Gephardt, but I don't think he's got a shot at it.

Grantcart thinks it is going to be Kaine.

I still think it's Biden.

We shall see.

25. of course since I have made a public prediction it will almost certainly
Edited on Mon Aug-18-08 09:06 PM by grantcart
doom Kaine's chances for the position and at this hour the Obama campaign are feverishly reworking all of the press packets and logos that had been put to sleep last week.

I have to go to the desert of California starting tomorrow so my punishment will have to be delayed until the convention. On the other hand if I should win I will miss all the evidence of the win and so this is another completely brainless thing I have agreed to which can only further my humiliation and give me no possibility of enjoying the fruits of victory - par for the course lol.

P.S. Since I won't be here to defend my position I'll do it here:

Kaine has a unique position in expanding Obama's electoral map - born in Minnesota he grew up in Missouri and married the daughter of a popular ex governor of Virginia. He worked as a civil rights lawyer. He is a devout Catholic which will help in the Irish, Italian and ethnic Catholic neighborhoods. He is said to be fluent in Spanish and if so would have a dramatic impact in Florida, Texas, Arizona and Nevada.

In looking at the very careful words of Senator Obama it seems that he has in mind something very substantive about changing the way that government uses its resources. Anybody who has worked with federal money knows that a huge percentage of it gets used up before it ever leaves the confines of Washington DC. Senator is a very frugal person and I think this comes from his childhood living with a single mom. I believe it was reinforced when he was a community organizer and saw how a lot of federal money never reaches the people that it was intended too. That frugality is reflected in his campaign. If the above is true then it would be very helpful to have somebody who has been a very effective Mayor and Governor. Kaine would be excellent at this. For Obama to launch a new "Federal Partnership" that would create more flexible federal programs that would give more control to local governments and result in more dollars getting to the local levels would rip a major issue away from Republicans. An issue that Bush abandonded and that McCain is clueless on.

The issue of Civil Unions and Same Sex Marriage has been a hot issue in Virginia where the issues were raised as one of the main issues in both the Lt Governor and Governor campaigns that Kaine participated in and where he was attacked for being for same sex marriage and civil unions. His reply is often quoted here as being anti-gay, and it was "I never said I was for civil unions but I believe that homosexuals should have the same civil rights as heterosexuals". To me that sounds like a distinction without a difference and while I wish he could have run on a simple same sex marriage platform that doesn't seem to be the case in Virginia. Allogations that he supported the marriage ammendment in Virginia are not true. There was strategic discussions among gay activists (a rare joint republican/democrat joint effort) who at first did not want Kaine to veto the legislation but rather sign the legislation and then control the language. At some point that strategy was changed and Kaine did veto the ammendment which went on the ballot anyway. His position on the ammendment (which passed by substantial margins was clear) “For those reasons, I will vote against the marriage amendment in November, and I urge other Virginians to vote against it as well.” His very first act as Governor was to sign an executive order to include sexual orientation into the law protecting civil rights and it received vigorous opposition by the state legislature and the Attorney General.

edited to add: I will be happy with any Obama choice for VP including Senator Clinton.

27. well Putin has definitely helped Biden and that is smart money

(intrade currently has Biden at 31 and Kaine at 12 and everyone else behind that)

I also would not be surprise if he picked Clinton for VP and used Kaine for Chief of Staff and Biden for Secretary of State.

In some ways I would simply like him to pick Clinton because no one thinks he will.

18. OK, it's booked. Now would you care to explain why you think Obama would choose him?
When I think of Gephardt, I think of a former congressman from a district in Missouri who buddied up to bush* when it was politically advantageous and in the process abandoned the Constitution and helped see hundreds of thousands of people to their deaths in an illegal war.

I think of a cynical politician who used rovian tactics on Howard Dean before the Iowa caucuses and didn't even have the balls to admit it until federal law demanded disclosure.

I think of a blue dog Democrat who led the minority to support numerous bush* policies against the will of those who elected him.

I think of a politician who would detract from Obama's core message of Hope and Change turning off his base.

In fact, there's not one thing I can think of that would make Gephardt a good choice for VP consideration. Even the idea that he's well liked by labor doesn't fly because Obama already has the endorsements from all the major unions which is the best that Gephardt could do. The rank and file won't be persuaded to change their votes based on a washed out congressman.

Really, when I think of Gephardt I just think failure.

But if there's something I'm missing please correct me.

22. The signature bet between TexasObserver and Unsane is set.
The bet is over whether Gephardt will be the nominee.

If I win, Unsane has to display as his signature for a week:

"I bet with TexasObserver on politics, and I lost."

If Unsane is right about Gephardt being the VP pick, I have to display as my signature for a week:

"I bet with Unsane over politics, and I lost."

24. Unsane, our signature bet has prompted another sig bet with grantcart.
grantcart can't call the bet you and I made, but he wants to bet, too.

grantcart has made the same bet with me over Tim Kaine.

If he's right, and the pick is Tim Kaine, I'll have my signature say "I bet with grantcart over politics, and I lost." for one week.

If he's wrong, and the pick is not Tim Kaine, grantcart will have his signature say "I bet with TexasObserver over politics and I lost." for one week.

The bet runs from the time of the announcement until a week thereafter.

So, if it's not Kaine or Gephardt, I own these two guys for the next week. I can lose to only one of them! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I'm guaranteed one win, no matter what happens.
