OBAMA: "I will win, don't worry about that"

"I will win, don't worry about that," Obama told a crowd of 1,300 people at a fundraiser Sunday night in California, one of three back-to-back events which netted a staggering 7.8 million dollars, his campaign said.

Obama's vow opened a crucial week in his White House duel with Republican John McCain, the last before his party's nominating convention in Denver, with expectations high that he will soon name his vice presidential nominee.

Given the deteriorating economy, "bungled" foreign policy and unpopular Iraq war, Obama said it would be nice if voters would simply think "'Toss the bums out, we're starting from scratch, we're starting over.'"

"These are the knuckleheads who have been in charge -- throw em out. But American politics aren't that simple," he said, arguing people needed to be prodded into voting for change.

Truly, I have heard enough of low-life, low-road liar McCain's commercials. These commercials are nothing but lies. I hate him and the corporate crooks who support him.

(paraphrased, of course) early on, I think before Obama announced, he called Cummings and asked if he would support his campaign.

Cummings said, "campaign for what?"
Obama said, "campaign for President."
Cummings said, "President of what?"
Obama said, "President of the United States."
Cummings said he would support the campaign only if Obama really thought he could win.
Obama said, "Not only do I think I can win. I will win."

I love that story. Some people might spin it as arrogance. But I think that it is the kind of confidence a presidential candidate has to have if that candidate is going to win.

So I'd prefer we not "toss all the bums out and start fresh."

The majority of elected officials in the USA are Democrats.

McCain is, facts-be-damned, making a hard pitch that he's an agent of change. Done right, this could be a very effective pitch to people who, battered by the terrible changes brought by the Bush policies, instinctively don't want too much change or the wrong kind of change coming out of Washington. For most voters, McCain is a proven quantity; Obama is a risk. It's not fair, but politics doesn't have to be fair.

Obama's main task as a candidate will be to be a reassuring presense, not a radical reformer. For all my friends here to worry that he's selling out---please understand that we're not the targeted demographic. We're not the people who have to be swung over. The only logical strategy McCain can pursue is to present himself as the safer choice. He'd be insane not to. This "celebrity" shit is softball compared to what he'll eventually need to do by mid October.

Can Republicans really pull the wool over voters eyes this year? I hope not, but it's not like they haven't done exactly that several times over in the past 50 years.

It's time to play rough. Enough of the Rick Warren crap; McCain cheated there, and will do so again.
