A North Vietnamese Secret Catholic Guard with apparent Sadistic tendencies. Yeah right
Edited on Mon Aug-18-08 11:39 AM by grantcart
Regarding McCains fairy tale of mystical Christmas communion with a North Vietnamese prison guard. Had a little experience with Vietnamese, Vietcong and North Vietnamese Army Regulars.

Here are the relevant questions you have to ask:

How likely would it be that the guard would havesuccessfully concealed his faith from the NVA , who would have happily transferred him elsewhere rather than put a catholic in contact with Americans in a prison camp.

How likely would it be that a committed Catholic (even a secret one) would have been picked to be a prison guard? You don't get picked for one of these positions because you are well read, devout or pietistic in nature. In fact you have to be able to demonstrate a satisfactory level of sadism to get this job. One of the key components of the NVA? Constant 'peer' review on questions of ideological purity, especially for plum positions as POW guard that would keep you out of the tunnels, the jungle and the hot zones.

How likely would it be that a prison guard who is a secret Catholic with some sadistic tendencies gets picked to be a prison guard and then would share a symbolic drawing in the sand moment with a single POW who then happens to be the one POW who runs for President 40 years later. (Just a coincidence that none of the other POWs had anything approaching this kind of a meeting isn't it? This guard is not only a catholic who secretly hides his faith but also has Nostradamus abilities that he can pick out the one POW destined to share it with an adoring audience.

If you believe that these are all likely then you qualify for a free tour of my open house for bridges I have to sell quick - bring your check book.

1. Also how crazy is it that one of the said POWs favorite authors
Wrote a story eerily similar and said POW made no mention of this experience till 35 years later.

17. And this "Cross in the Sand" story appeared from McCain in a book ghost written by the guy
who has been pumping out McCain propaganda in the form of many books for years?

4. Quit confusing all the McPOW defenders here with facts and logic!
I'm having the same argument with people on here. The cross story is obvious plagiarized bullshit that McCain hasn't even been able to keep straight the past few years.

6.  Although I think your analysis is accurate, I questin the utility
of this argument. This is an unverifiable story and when there is a he said, we say story, we lose. Where I do think there is potential traction is the new coda to the story he added Saturday. Reporters who have covered him say that they have heard this story many times except for the final fillip where he characterizes this as " 2 Christians worshiping together".
Where did the concept of mutual prayer originate? Its genesis was in the minds of McCain's spin masters, not a prison yard in Hanoi. Clearly this invention is a blatant pander to this audience. Many of those covering St. John are beginning to see his feet of clay. This is the type of embellishment that will continue to erode his image. Broad based attacks on his POW experience are likely to backfire as much as the Petreus/Betray us ad. Targeted examples of verifiable lies are where our focus should be.

14. most Christians absolutely despise false piety especially when it is for political gain

It isn't going to offend anyone that supports Obama and at the very least will make Christian supports of McCain think again.

Obviously I am not going to paint this on the side of my house however lol

9. Catholic sadist is not an oxymoron
Not bashing, just noting the obvious.

The alternative religious choice for a Vietnamese is Buddhism.

Just saying.

I think the story is horse-shit, but the presumption a Catholic would never get mixed up in torture is kind of anti-historical.

on his bed those scarlet ribbons, scarlet ribbons for his hair.

15. The Knights of St. John McCain
The Hanoi Chapter would bring him his sword and cape, all the time screaming a Latin mass in a threatening manner to confuse the other ideologically pure guards.

22. This may be big trouble for him.
If he is SMOM, that means he has sworn an oath of allegiance to a foreign power. Not good.

I can just see him turn to the camera as he is being scourged and saying in a very bad Martha Stewart imitation:

"Mortification of the flesh is a good thing."

21. HEY! That was a moving, heartfelt HUMAN story of love & compassion for a prisoner
which gave him hope to go on & survive in captivity until he gained his freedom.

That's how it was for McCain - and that's how it was for Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in his 1973 book The Gulag Archipelago in which he tell a nearly identical tale.

26. Submitted for your approval: A man steals stories from a famous author, stories ...
... stories that give the man the ability to "connect" with Republican "faith" voters because it tugs at their religious heartstrings. Then one day, someone who knows about the famous author, and knows that his story was lifted by the thief, points out the theft.

An old, balding liar is about enter ... THE TWILIGHT OF LIFE ZONE.
