Leon Panetta worried convention is shaping up to be a Bill and Hillary psycho-drama.
Bill Clinton's Chief Of Staff "Disturbed" By Some Hillary Backers
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/18/bill-clintons-chief-of-st_n_119499.html

The Huffington Post | August 18, 2008 08:33 AM

The UK Times profiles Lady de Rothschild, a wealthy Hillary Clinton supporter considering voting for John McCain. Bill Clinton's chief of staff is quoted on the difficulty of satisfying such people:

Leon Panetta, Bill Clinton's former White House chief of staff, was tasked by the Obama campaign this summer with soothing ruffled feelings and helping Hillary loyalists to get over their sense of loss. It has been a demanding assignment.

"There is a sense of entitlement that almost seems to be inbred," Panetta said. "They are convinced Hillary is the one who should be assuming the mantle and it's tough to crack that."

Rothschild is the founder of Together4Us, a group formed to "honour" Clinton and the nearly 18m voters who supported her in the primaries. Among its demands were a state-by-state roll-call of votes - a final show of muscle by the vanquished Clinton - and a prime speaking slot for her.

They got what they wanted after Obama caved in last week. Seasoned advisers fear the convention is shaping up to be a divisive Bill and Hillary psycho-drama. "It's not something that I would have recommended, but they're trying to bend over backwards as far as they can to accommodate her," said Panetta. "I'm a little disturbed that this keeps playing out."

9. Panetta * 3 = Clark
Seriously, you didn't think Panetta was equal to Clark, didja?

I've been out of town til last night, saw the article on HuffPost this morning, searched for the title of the article and didn't find it.

But I scrounged around some more and found it here, so right you are: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=6656441

10. I'm sure there are plenty more anti-Clinton stories out there for DUers to salivate over.
Keep posting them. Meanwhile, Bill and Hillary are wildly popular outside of DU and will help Obama go on to total victory.

In the real world.

13. Really? I took it more as an ANTI-Obama report.

The inability to discern that rather nicely makes Panetta's point about the "inbred sense of entitlement" of some Clinton supporters.

14. I hope you don't mean me, because I was never a Hillary supporter.
If it's an anti-Obama piece, then why are you posting it at Democratic Underground?

Nice try.

15. A precautionary warning from a Clinton insider is absolutely relevant information.
Again, sorry you are too blind to see it. Which, for the record, is absolutely the epicenter of division around here.

Bill Clinton: "One could argue no one is ready to be president."

Hillary Clinton: "I bring a lifetime of experience, Senator McCain brings a lifetime of experience, Obama brings a speech he gave in 2002."

6. I think they're managing expectations.
The commentars (especially the right wingers) will be looking for any hint from the podium during the Clintons' two speeches that they think Obama isn't ready to lead. They'll warp and twist every word from the lectern that Clintons say to invent that they lack faith in his abilities.

This is the only soap opera they have left to gin up ratings for a highly managed event. By making the worries up front now, it will make a really strong highlight if the Clinton's both come out swinging vociferously in Obama's praise next week.

Or at least that's my hope.

11. "... Or at least that's my hope."
Well, that's pretty much all we have to go on when the evidence points to quite the opposite.

12. I guess that's up to them if they want to effectively end their careers at the convention.
I hope they wont.

Honestly I'm more worried about Bill going off and wagging his finger at the delegates than Hillary making a fool of herself.

16. Nah--Hillary's already said she'll give her delegates to Obama
on the second ballot. Then he'll be nearly unanimously confirmed, and the media will have to shut the fuck up about divisions in the Democratic Party when Obama brings the fucking house down on Thursday.

18. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on this one.
I was wrong when I thought she would drag the nomination fight to the convention, so I've softened on Hillary quite a bit.
