McCain takes lead over Obama
Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 09:28 AM by cynatnite
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.

The poll was taken Thursday through Saturday as Obama wrapped up a weeklong vacation in Hawaii that ceded the political spotlight to McCain, who seized on Russia's invasion of Georgia to emphasize his foreign policy views.

2. Yeah, sure.
Tomorrow's poll will be just the opposite.

Shifts like this don't happen overnight.

It's all BS at this point.

3. I have to admit this isn't great news and Team Obama better respond better to McCain's attacks even
if it means going on the attack against McCain. I'm afraid that McCain is being successful in defining Obama. While this is the first poll I've seen that has McCain ahead nationally, the trend has been moving in that direction in all other polls, too.

4. Please note, because this is IMPORTANT. They polled "likely voters"
Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 09:38 AM by pnwmom
NOT registered voters.

That means that this poll discounted the votes of all the new registrants out there, since they don't have a history of voting in previous elections.

This type of poll will always understate the votes of someone like Obama.

(Also, Obama had been out on vacation all week while McCain was strutting in front of the cameras spouting off about Georgia.)

5. McCain has taken the lead electorally too

This is really disappointing, it's looking just like 2004. When are the Obama campaign people going to get off their asses and do something?

6. Actually, if you compare it to 2004, it's far worse.
At this point in 2004, Kerry still had more than 300 electoral votes:

That said, Kerry's grip on those votes was far more tenuous than Obama's hold on the votes he now has -- even California was practically a toss up. It's a much different contest this time around.

8. I'll start looking at polls seriously after Labor Day
Granted, McCone is getting an absolute free pass on his gaffes, cheating and lies and negative ads.

After the conventions and the candidates have their VPs, we'll start seeing people get interested.

As for polls, ALWAYS act like you are 10 points behind.

13. So there are racists out there??
You don't think everyone knows that. That has nothing to do with staying positive and getting Obama elected.

15. Poll or no Poll -- the writing was on the wall and this was EXPECTED
Now lets see if the democrats can stop being the good boys and realize for once after 30 years that to win you have to fight and go negative because clearly the public doesnt hate you for it, they enjoy it and expect it.
