How NOT to answer the Moslem meme
OK, I've been out of action a bit, but with my man apparently up as potential VP, I thought I'd check in. I have a complaint about the way some Dems are answering the OMG-Barack-H-Obama-Is-A-Moslem meme. I've heard too many conversations that go like this:

Dem: Have you considered voting for Obama?
Idiot: No, because he's a Moslem.
Dem: Barack Obama is a Christian, not a Moslem. He attends X church, believes Y, and I can send you more information debunking popular e-mail smears etc.

What's wrong with this conversation? Well, how about the fact that we're effectively saying that it would be a problem were Obama a Moslem. How about the fact that the idiot's bigotry goes completely unchallenged?

Now maybe I'm overly idealistic, but I have a real problem with not at least saying "not that it would be a problem were he a Moslem, since many American Moslems have contributed greatly to the life of our nation", or something like that.

List of North American Moslems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_North_American_Muslims

Electioneering isn't a time to teach "hard truths", but let's at least acknowledge the truth. Moslems deserve better from progressives, and we should be doing better.

That goes for everyone, from Barack down to you and me.

3. I think it's a different battle
It offends me a bit too when someone says he's a Muslim and people are quick to go "oh no no no, he's not, he's ok, he's not a muslim" because while it's true, and he's not, the way they react seems to buy into the "well a muslim wouldn't make a good president" meme.

And i'm sure there are plenty of people on this board who would actually say that too.

I think the proper response would be "Well, I don't think being a muslim would make someone a bad President, but that's moot since Obama is a christian." etc. If they want to argue the muslim point pretty hard, then you can probably be assured they'd never vote for a Democrat if their lives depended on it (which they do).

When someone says to ME a muslim would make a bad president I just say "So my Great Uncle, a United States Marine, who fought and bled for his country on Okinawa, and then helped build industry, and help the less fortunate in this country for 60 years wouldn't make a good President because he was a Muslim?"

I've actually had people tell me that he wouldn't after that too...That's when you know they're totally insane.

4. I was tempted to correct your spelling....

but is see both are used.

Alternate Spellings: Moslem -- but "Muslim" is preferred and renders a pronunciation more faithful to the Arabic word.

5. You think you're going to change somebody's opinion on Islam in a 1 minute conversation?
I know, I know, you're trying to make the bigger point, but that won't work with these people.

Give them the facts that work within their limited worldview and helps elect Obama, and move on.

6. Agreed--it's always driven me crazy
that, in this day and age, people are still capable of that level of ignorance...unbelievable that these people never learned that Islam is an essentially peaceful religion, not a terrorist organization. Yeah, okay, the Sept. 11 terrorists were (allegedly) Muslim (personally, I'm all about :tinfoilhat:) so now every Muslim is a terrorist. That's an incredibly broad brush--and resoundingly incorrect. But then again, these ignoramuses LOVE black-and-white issues, and we haven't had the Commies to fear for quite a while--gotta find another group to hate. :eyes:
