'Underusing' the P.O.W. Story...ugh.
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_08/014394.php

'UNDERUSING' THE P.O.W. STORY.... We talked the other day about the McCain campaign overplaying the prisoner-of-war card, so much so that even sympathetic reporters have begun questioning McCain for "trivializing" his service.

For its part, the McCain campaign has come to the opposite conclusion.

They will be prepared to show McCain's "home" in Hanoi by using images of his cell. They claim they have not overused the POW element and insist they have "underused it."

There's no indication that McCain aides were kidding.

In case there were any doubts about McCain excessively exploiting his service, even the NYT's Maureen Dowd is calling McCain out: "McCain is now in danger of exceeding his credit limit on the equivalent of an American Express black card. His campaign is cheapening his greatest strength -- and making a mockery of his already dubious claim that he's reticent to talk about his P.O.W. experience -- by flashing the P.O.W. card to rebut any criticism, no matter how unrelated."

Given that the campaign apparently believes it's been "underusing" the story, I suppose we can expect this to get considerably worse.

1. Good! I hope they use it twice daily for the next few months.
In fact we should put together a montage so we can blast the public with it. Then it will be like an overused hankie.

3. Yes they are in danger of making it like Rudy's 9/11
Jon Stewart pretty much put him away by showing how often Rudy went to that well

2. I think they are fools if the keep using it...
"A noun, a verb, and 9-11" pretty much sunk rudy, but if they want to go for the "a noun, a verb and POW" strategy, I say have at it dipshits...

5. We need a 527 with former POWs to speak up, I'll donate happily.
I'm sick and tired of this bullshit.

That asshole cracked up what, four or five aircraft before being captured?

To think that he now supports US torture of detainees, the most shocking of his flip-flops.

How much worse was the treatment of other POWs, I wonder?

I'm sure it would be difficult for former POWs to come forward to speak up about this, but it would be powerful and I'd gladly provide what financial and other support I could to their families and to their cause.

:patriot:

10. I think he'll quit after we start bringing up how he always wants to gut
veteran's programs for the modern day vets. He was not much of a star during his Navy days. Didn't he crash a fighter jet and set an aircraft carrier on fire?

6. It's Okay..AMrericans are smartening up and
there's no other conclusion to reach but that john mccain's time as a POW did something to his mental agility and completely wiped out his diplomacy gene.

The main$tream Media gave us an AWOLi but they're not gonna give us the guy who can't lip a sentence without the letters "p-o-w".

12. ugh. can't fucking wait.
just watched part of the rerun of this morning's Meet the Press, and Nantucket Brokaw said that a "Republican stragist" emailed him after Biden's "seven tables" line and said "now that's too harsh, this is someone who didn't have a kitchen table for five and a half years". Well then Brokaw, maybe McCain's experience would reflect a little bit better in his policies...THAT's the point that Obama and Biden have been making. He's been in the beer bubble so long that he thinks the economy is going swimmingly, and that rich people deserve tax cuts. Chuck Todd said "you know, it's interesting, Democrats are kind of getting upset as saying that he is using the POW excuse too often. Maureen Dowd had an article about it (dear god, let's hope that no one confused Maureen Dowd for a democrat with his wording). But you know what, it works!"
