There are some polls that show a tightening of the popular vote, but sites that track the Electoral College show Obama with a pretty good lead. I wonder how the conservatives would react if Obama won the EC but lost the popular vote?

1. The EC is a sacred cow of conservatives
The states that benefit from it are generally conservative.

There is no way they would approve of abolishing it even if what you describe happens.

3. It has happened before
and if it were to happen again this time the whiny conservatives would probably start lawsuits and screaming about stolen elections and voter fraud.

10. Latest was Bush with the assistance of the SCOTUS
Interesting thing was according the NY Daily News Rove thought Bush might win the popular vote and lose the electoral college to Gore. They had some kind plan in place using their mouth pieces to try to overturn it or at least raise one helluva stink.

May be the only good thing about them winning the way they did in 2000. Could help shut them up if Obama beats McCain in the electoral college but loses the popular vote.

But I'm fearing another 2000.

4. Sites that predict the EC have out of date, within-margin-of-error polls.
Not that popular vote polls are that accurate either.

Obama might do better in the popular vote than the electoral college. His 50-state strategy might help bring up his popular vote in states he won't necessarily win (whereas McCain is running a more traditional campaign mainly in the swing states).

6. Sure. With 150,000 more in Ohio, Gore would have.
Switching one or two big plums - Ohio and Florida are 5% of the EV - is worth more than gaining 3% in the polls. This is like winning a football game in overtime - it counts just as much and there's a huge difference in the success of teams that win the close ones compared to teams that lose the close ones. I guess the last two presidential elections illustrate this negatively.

7. Is there a chance that the election could be stolen again . . . ??? Yes!
They've been stealing elections via computer counting since the mid-1960's

when the large counting computers used by "MSM" began to come on line . . .

11. With 50 state strategy in place, that won't happen without fraud.
If Republicans do some of that electronic vote flipping to keep the Red States looking red, then that could happen. (I don't think they'll do their voter registration challenges at polling places in Democratic districts all over the country, just in battleground states like last time.)

But with the 50 state strategy, if voting proceeds without as much interference as last time, the popular vote will be strong for Obama as well.

14. It's possible
but it would have to be a very close popular vote for that to happen. McCain can't win by 2-3 percent in the popular vote and the lose the electoral college. It would have to be within a percentage point. Like in 2000.
