McCain camp: GOP convention might be delayed if Gustav hits
Edited on Thu Aug-28-08 11:12 PM by EV_Ares
Sen. John McCain's spokesman said today that the Republican convention might be postponed if Tropical Storm Gustav strengthens into a hurricane and hits the Gulf Coast on Monday.

"Sen. McCain has always been sensitive to national crisis — in the 2000 race he postponed his announcement because of the situation in the Balkans — and we are monitoring the situation very closely," spokesman Tucker Bounds told MarketWatch.

He added, however, "I have no specifics to announce."

MarketWatch explains: Party officials presumably don't want to be holding what is normally a celebration at a time when Gulf Coast residents may be evacuating their homes for the second time in three years.

Louisiana's Republican governor, Bobby Jindal, has said he'll skip the conclave in Saint Paul, Minn., if Gustav hits this weekend. At the moment, the storm is on track to hit New Orleans as the city marks the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

They know their convention is going to be extremely lame.

11. They are going to lose their shirts $$$ this late in the game.
All those vendors and caterers who will have already been paid.... all those folks going that won't be able to reschedule.

A big shout out to the AFA for the prayers for rain, btw.

9. A celebration?
What the fuck do they have to celebrate? Losing another 15 or so seats in the House? Loosing between 4 and 8 more seats in the Senate? Trying to come back and top the Obama speech?

The only thing they have to celebrate are the hookers and hustlers waiting at the doors after the speeches are over.

...with only 60+ days until the election. That should be interesting.

34. Simple - everyone gets in his private jet
and flies off to one of the other seven convention centers. Or is it nine? I'll have to let my staff get back to you.

Another example of being out-of-touch with people (caterers, drivers, convention center staff, etc) who actually work for a living.

36. And what about Minnesota & Minneapolis which invested millions into this convention
and have them leave at the last moment.

Consider this - there are working class people in that city that will be affected if the republicans don't show up. I was a volunteer for when the republicans can to Philly in 2000 (not for the republicans but the city of Philly) and there is alot of work for at least a year into that convention. You pull that convention you are totally screwing over not only Minneapolis but the state too.

19. They will have to delay it because he won't have a VP pick
willing to do the job. They know this campaign will be a career-ender.

What if they gave a convention and the VP pick didn't show, lol?

24. No way - a logistical nightmare if not impossibility
They are reeling, 72 hours to pull it all together. It shows they are in complete disarray!

The bully got called out to the playground after school and now is trying to say he has a Dr's appointment. Postponing the ass kicking will just make it worse.

25. I posted this earlier today but people didnt believe me.
The McCain camp are panicking after Obama's speech. They need time to retool their message and the hurricane is a handy excuse.

Expect to see McCain down in N.O. filling up sandbags for a photo-op.

29. They can just hold a short, businesslike convention to nominate him
Could be done in 1 day with just the delegates and the candidate and the committees. Maybe 1000 people. All the rest is pageantry. Why should they be able to delay the convention just to be able to have their pageantry. If there's a hurricane and they want to tone it down, they are welcome to do so. But they can't change the rules in the middle of the game.

30. Why? Hurricanes rarely go that far up the Mississippi
What could McCain and the delegates do anyway, besides bake a cake? Surely the administration has learned its lessons, FEMA's now running efficiently, all the levees are fixed....oh, sorry - I was fast-forwarding to the end of Obama's first term.

Jindal has a reason to stick around his state, the others don't. It's just fear of having to follow Obama.

35. Hey McCain - you need to take a shit or get off the shitter
Yes Gustav is coming but so are thousands of delegates, politicans and fans who made changes to their schedule, took vacation and dipped into their savings to pay for a trip to Minnesota for your convention. And for those of your fans like us, who live from paycheck to paycheck, you're gonna toss away THEIR money with unrefundable airfairs & hotel deposits. PLUS, the city of Minneapolis and it's surrounding communities have invested MILLIONS into hosting this invent PLUS forced the Twins to play elsewhere to host your event.

I realize that a hurricane is the WORST possible thing to hit during your convention (Perhaps James Dobson shouldn't have prayed so hard for Rain). But you can host your event and STILL do good for those in the path of the Hurricane. Geez, the right planner would have your ass down in New Orleans on Monday and Tuesday working with BObby Jindal.

But instead you would rather screw over Minnesota and Minneapolis. You think you can postpone this by a few weeks and still in put on something relitively close to a decent convention.

Or perhaps the real truth is you know you screwed up trying to host your convention the week after ours.
