What would be the practical impact of rescheduling a convention?
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 12:18 AM by FVZA_Colonel
I mean, you've got caterers, air plane reservations, hotel room bookings... not to mention the number of people who wouldn't be able to show up for a rescheduled convention. How would they actually pull it off?

1. It's utterly mind-boggling.
For all the above, plus all the contracts that have been signed. Food ordered. Flowers ordered. Media scheduled. Electronics and cabling. Police and city personnel. I can't even begin to cover all the elements.

5. .
Don't forget the actual hall they're renting, plus the stage sets, sound equipment, etc. Let's hope they postpone to put a dent in their finances. (Though, for the record, I want no one to be hurt in Gustav if it postpones the convention.)

They could lose a lot of money doing that. What would be the impact of doing this...

The spending cap kicks in as soon as McCain is officially nominated.

They could help pack sandbags between speeches and make sure that bottled hot water is delivered to dehydrated babies.

18. I don't see how it can be postponed
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 12:24 AM by GloriaSmith
and I don't think it will.

The convention center could be booked from now until November. They have already started building the stage and installing the light and sound system. Delegates have already purchased their tickets and booked their hotels. Any flyers/brochures with the date on it would need to be changed. Vendors have probably already started shipping their material to the site, caterers have already ordered the food...I just don't see how it can realistically be postponed at this point.

If they manage to postpone it, they'll lose a TON of money on the work already done and end up spending more on the new event because everything would have to be done much faster.

34. All publicity is good publicity
People will stop talking about Obama and his speech and start talking about whether or not the republican convention will go on. then when it does, people who would not other wise watch it will tune in to see if they can carry it off. JMHO

24. The RNC doesn't care about people or vendors, but they could recess and reconvene later via
teleconference or have a candidate committee make appoints just before state deadlines to get on ballot. Something fowl is a foot.

25. They would not be able to conceivably re-schedule all of that within 3 days.
I am betting they had to put down deposits on everything already too. If they canceled, they'd lose a shitload of money. So they're basically gonna have to do what Republicans do best, stay the course on a stupid fucking decision.

28. They're screwed if they try to reschedule this.
For example, the Minnesota Twins are currently on a 14-game roadtrip to accomodate the GOP schedule. If the Repubs try for a later date, the Twin Cities will be a mess.
