Obama's speech was amazing. Made me really proud to be an American! My god it is so refreshing after having to listen to George Bush the past eight years. However, it was not just Obama. I thought Al Gore also gave a fantastic and inspiring speech. Finally, the fact that this acceptance speech was not merely a bunch of Democratic delegates and insiders, but a lot of normal folks who are being energized and urged to volunteer and work was just great. I contribute when I can, but it is nice reminder that I can contribute by registering people to vote, which not only helps elect Obama, but helps people to take ownership in their government, and encourages leaders to be more responsive to those who vote for them.
I am convinced that Obama represents perhaps our best chance in the foreseeable future to prevail against a corporate controlled media that seems dedicated to preserving the status quo, and electing John McCain. I expect in the days that follow, Big Media will apply billions of dollars of resources towards telling people what to think and how to vote, as pundits act as political mercenaries and try to tell us that we did not see what saw, did not hear what we heard, and did not feel what we felt as we heard the speakers on the last day of the Democratic convention.
I have written many times about my pessimissm regarding the chances of any Democrat in the face of a corporate controlled MSM to prevail, but perhaps there is a way to take the message directly to the people without the filter of the political pundits. Maybe the ability of a grass roots movement to overcome the corporate/political power structure is not a dead relic of my parents' generation. I remain concerned, but perhaps there is hope that Democracy is real, and not a carefully staged illused by the five media companies that spend hour upon hour reciting the talking points fed to them by the GOP.
Maybe this feeling of empowerment is temporary, but I will enjoy while it lasts, or until I turn on CNN.
