I can't help but think this was a desperation pick by McCain. Or, really by Rove. There's no doubt in my mind that McCain didn't want to pick Palin, but Rove stepped in out of the fear of what was taking place during the Democratic convention. Its a pure Rovian tactic, trying to get the voters who were divided against Obama because of the sex issue.
I definitely could see it backfiring. I'm sure that there are some PUMA holdouts that will love this pick, but I doubt many of them would have switched to Obama anyway. Perhaps the worst it does is nab a few holdouts that were planning to vote 3rd party to McCain.
The GOP clearly believe they've lost this election without sexism dividing the Democratic party. I think we should see the results pretty quickly whether or not this pick pulled a lot of feminists off of Obama and to McCain. It seems laughable that it would, but I'll still wait and see. And if it fails to do that, it seems to me that this one is completely over at that point.
If McCain doesn't pass Obama after the RNC, this election is over. Not just close some distance, or narrow the lead, but if he doesn't take a lead over Obama, they've wrapped this thing up, IMO.
