My mom, a life long Dem, my wife, former Rep who was disgusted by Bush and voted for Kerry then supported Hillary, and my sister, a lifelong Dem, have all called from work and have a VERY favorable first impression.

This was a politcal masterstroke by McCain. They can argue she has as much experience running a state governmnet as Obama has in the Senate, she is a Mom who carried to term a baby with Dowwn's Syndrome (locksd up the Rep base), comes from middle class roots, has a son that enlisted in the Army and is on his way to Iraq...it plays very well in Peoria.

I doubt it will last, but they took all the momentum away from Obama after that great, historic speech, and he has completely changed the dynamic.

Damn.

16. Really, that's not the way to go
Don't touch her family situation. Honor her choice like we honor McSame's POW experience.

Here's what you do instead. Any question posed to her, should be posed in the light that she will become President. "Given John McCain's age, statistically there's a good chance you will govern. How will you......?"

Otherwise, keep connecting her with the past 8 years, she's a shill for oil, and she's had some integrity issues.

19. How has she abandoned her child to work?
I know plenty of Mom's who work that have special needs children, and I wouldn't consider any of them "abandoning" the child.

That really, really smacks of ignorance.

Wait until they find out about her ABUSE OF POWER investigation anti-choice, anti-science, right-wing side of it -- behind the "pretty" face.

Also wait for the ad Obama will inevitably put out with Palin saying she doesn't even know what the VP does.

...and to be honest, there aren't a lot of other Republican VP's you could say that about.

34. OT: Can we please throttle back on the "concern-troll" stuff?
Especially people with high post counts

Sometimes we come here to test what we're hearing around us. I often cite my Single Issue Voter parents and their opinions, which I think present a good gauge of what the older, white, Catholic voters are thinking. Like Thom Hartmann, I like to hear what's going on outside the bubble sometimes.

The OP could be living in a very Red town, or could be surrounded by non-progressive people where she lives or works. Hell, I'm in a dark blue city in a light blue state, and most of my book club voted for Bush the first time "because he's cute." If I reported back then that "to hell with issues, people, I'm worried because some of my friends are going to vote for Chimpy because he's cute" does that make me a concern troll?

38. What? Is she married?
I think we should avoid that one. The inner circle of the GOP will condemn her all on their own. It's obvious that McCain picked her simply because of her gender, which says a lot about his willingness to exploit women for his own needs. We all know that the GOP would never put a woman on the ticket in a traditional election cycle. The Religious right thinks women are not equal.

23. Takes away some headlines for now but
the comparisons in speeches will come up again, when MCCain has to give his. But I agree that the first impression just threw a curve ball into the race. It is one that still can be hit, but it will require a different strategy than for a person like romney for sure.

25. Not a masterstroke, imo
1. experience argument won't be touched by either party now
2. plays to small repub base, doesn't change anything they already didn't have in all other elections.
3. comes from middle class, but so does Biden... I think it's moot
4. son going to Iraq... so does Biden... more moot

I'd like to add:

5. Big Oil connections
6. pro-life... balance out most women that were Hillary supporters won't be going to HER.
7. Wildlife has bones to pick w/ her.... not so great on environment/ nature.

ADD more to this list (I'm sure there are more ppl that have more info than I do)

Obama needs to be balls to the wall (pardon my expression) with key points from his speech that America as we NEED it, must be fought for, or it will be more foreign to us, then the last 8 years have been.

Gloves off Dems.... take our country back. We KNOW what we felt last night, they can show us bright shiny Palin (VP candy as we KNOW they are using her for)... but we will not waiver in our hope we confess.

McCain has given up. This is a joke.

However, no one has had time to be re-educated by the corp. "news" regarding what a great pick Palin is.

I figure by next week all of the cons will have their talking points properly programmed and they will be able to defend this pick.

These are good times to be a Democrat.

Comparing her 18 months as Governor with Obama's 4 years as a US senators are Apples and Oranges.

Joe Biden has a son heading to Iraq along with the fact that he was both Mother AND father to his young boys for 5 years while serving as a US Senator.

She was a throw-away choice - Danielle Quayle
