GOP Wants Bush to Draw Attention Off Iraq

By RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer

NEW YORK - Nervous Republicans are urging President Bush (news - web sites) to unveil a robust second-term agenda at his convention next week to shift voters' focus from the unpopular war in Iraq (news - web sites) and other issues that are a distraction to his re-election drive. Some contend the party should ditch the GOP-fueled controversy over rival John Kerry (news - web sites)'s combat record in Vietnam.

"If he gets on the future and effectively talks about the challenges that are ahead that only he can meet, then he'll be fine," said Joe Gaylord, a Republican strategist from Washington. "But if this campaign continues to be about Vietnam and the past, I don't think he's going to do so fine. I think it's a little dicey."

3. Here's the thing
They can't talk about the future! What is Bush gonna say?

"Well, I know things were pretty bad over the last four years, but I promise that I'll get it right next time."

4. These people want him to fight fair
And the campaign knows that if it fights fair, it will lose. Big time.

6. Its going to be difficult for them to focus on anything
AS the recent economic figires shhow the economy slowing down in the 2nd quater, along with the poverty figures, and polls showing that support for the Iraq war is dropping in a big way.

If they cant talk about issued, and can only focus on unsubstantiated stories on Kerry's military record, they election is already over for them.

7. I'd love to talk about Chimpy's "accomplishments"
Record deficit
First President since Hoover to have a net loss of jobs in his term
Sets new record for vacation time, even beating out Ronald Reagan
Sits in classroom not having a clue what to do while America is under attack

I agree with the Repukes, let's talk about other issues and not Iraq for now.

In either case.... Chimpy's a loser.

9. Too Late - Breaking Israeli Spy in Pentagon Story will keep Iraq in News
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 09:59 PM by yellowcanine
The story next week will be how much influence the Israeli spy had on Iraq war decisions - this will overshadow convention coverage. No one will remember what Bush talked about. Can anyone say NEGATIVE bounce?
