Governor Palin, I sincerely thank you.
Your words today did what nothing else could have done. All over the Democratic world, I see people who opposed Clinton and people who supported Clinton joined together in mutual outrage that such a coattail-riding nothing as you could compare yourself to Senator Clinton, and then claim that you're going to accomplish what she couldn't. I see unity, I see Democrats not hating each other anymore, and I fucking love it.

I'm guessing that McCain chose you because he mistakenly assumes that we Clinton supporters were only behind her because she's a woman. That's not even close to being the case. We supported her because she's tough, brilliant, hard-working, dedicated, and just a damned fine lawmaker and public servant all-around. The gender thing was mostly just the icing on the cake, so to speak. There are some within our ranks (not many, but some) who until recently were still rather dubious about voting for Obama. The wounds of the primary hurt badly, and left scars.

However, the moment that McCain nominated you as his running mate and you made your ill-fated little comments, you became the butterfly wings that started a windstorm. In this case, that storm didn't damage--it healed. It blew away months of resentment and hurt, and brought us all together again. People who were angry at Senator Clinton are now angry at YOU for comparing yourself to her--right or wrong, she's OURS. Clinton supporters who were hurting over the primaries are now furious with YOU for pretending that you're even fit to stand in her shadow, much less take her place in our hearts.

Governor Palin, let me be plain. You are a joke. You're a hyped-up beauty queen with practically no experience. You're in the midst of a scandal because you abused your power as a governor in order to get a bit of revenge on someone who refused to cater to your pathetic and petty nepotism. You're a woman who wants to strip away the bodily autonomy of your fellow women--a traitor of the vilest sort. You're only on the Republican ticket because Hillary Rodham Clinton worked her ASS off to convince America that a woman CAN be tough enough to lead this nation. Love Clinton or hate her, nobody can deny that she's tough as nails; her historic primary run, controversies and all, certainly made sure that the vast majority of America now believes that women ARE tough enough to lead. If not for the work she did in changing the status-quo mindset about what women are capable of doing, YOU would not be where you are today.

I have witnessed the careers of Senator Obama and Senator Clinton with admiration, frustration, and a deep sense of gratitude for being born in time to see all of these wonderful changes happen. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton brought more positive change to America during a PRIMARY than the Republican party has been able to muster after a GENERAL election win. We know Senator Obama and Senator Clinton; they are part of us, and we are part of them. John McCain is no Barack Obama, and YOU are certainly no Hillary Clinton. But in comparing yourself to her, you did what many of us thought could never happen--you brought Obama and Clinton supporters together again. Thank you ever so much--we appreciate it.

John McCain and Sarah Palin, be aware--you are standing on the tracks, and the Democratic train is coming. Oh yes it is. We are united, we are Democrats together, and we are unstoppable. The wisest thing that either of you two nincompoops could do would be to get the hell OUT OF THE WAY.

Kitchen sink? Get ready for the whole goddamned kitchen.

176. Damn straight
How dare McSame think that he could get Clinton's votes if he put a woman on the ticket. This woman is nowhere near the same ballpark as Hillary. We like Hillary because she is Hillary. For her to also be a woman is just an extra blessing.

182. Also a word of caution!
"Pride goeth before a fall"...........
found this smart comment on Huffpo!
Why did he pick Palin?

I don't think HE did. I think Mac & his campaign are being "handled". I believe that the reason he doesn't know his position on issues is because his "handlers" have told him which position he needs to take to win. I believe these "handlers" will expect to run the country should Mac win in November.

However, these "handlers" are not stupid and know there's a risk of Mac not being able to serve out his full term. Now, if you were one of these "handlers" and you had to deal with the Veep, would you be able to control Ridge, Romney, Pawlenty, Lieberman??? No. These folks have have been around a little on the federal/international level.

You'd want someone who is admittedly unaware of what's happening in Iraq, has no federal/international exposure. Someone who will totally dependent on you & your team for information. Imagine, you can say ANYTHING....

My thoughts. Why else would he pick someone he doesn't know? It's not just the Hillary voters. I'm a woman. We're not stupid. You can't replace one with another. ("Oh gosh, the Dems didn't pick a woman so I will")

They would all be hot for the beauty queen and vote with their peckers.

So imagine that McSame won.

Would her husband stay in Alaska with his job? We all know that Cindy doesn't like Washington. Would Cindy stay in Arizona? Did Mc choose her because he still thinks like a 17 year old boy?

Would she resign to spend more time with her family, and then Cheney sould return?

Not so much for myself, but for all the other young men I know who are informed and dedicated to political causes. There are many men my age who put careful consideration into their political stances and a tremendous amount of work toward making the world a better place. How is your comment any different from someone saying that young women should not vote because they are too emotional or not smart enough to make the right choice?

I had a feeling when Bush got in that they made a deal with McCain that they would put him in if he would just be nice. It was just a feeling, so nothing to go on, but it is their style. I hope everyone will do all they can to put our world back on track. You gave me some comfort, thank you. Mrs. Moose

239. Sarah Palin is not for the purpose of attracting die-hard Hillary supporters
she's there to bring back the arch-conservative wing of the Repuke party back into McCain's camp. She was a desperate pick, but sometimes, that Hail Mary pass wins the game. McLame's fund-raising numbers have already started to rise, and all without having to pick Mittens and risk pissing off the fundies (that was my prediction for his choice.)

The only women she will appeal to from the independents and the DLC'ers are those who really don't pay any attention to politics anyway. However, if we don't stop the "beauty queen" "abandoning her family" and "brought a defective child into the world" nonsense, we will just give those folks out there who are brainless enough, a reason to have some sympathy for her.

It was rightly noted in Denver this week that Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America but it turns out the women of America aren’t finished yet and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all.

Palin's comments were a slap in the face to all women. She has done nothing in her life that equates to what Hillary has done. She is currently be investigated and possible impeached from the Governers office.
McCain is openly mocking the Clintons and women everywhere. I hope that Hillary campaigns for Obama just to keep that fraud away from the White House.

And Palin called Hillary a whiner.

Once onstage, together with Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, Palin talked about what women expect from women leaders; how she took charge in Alaska during a political scandal that threatened to unseat the state's entire Republican power structure, and her feelings about Sen. Hillary Clinton. (She said she felt kind of bad she couldn't support a woman, but she didn't like Clinton's "whining."

Rush Limbaugh just called Palin a "babe." She might like it though -- beauty queens love been told their pretty. Maybe her and Cindy can compare tiars.

“We’re the ones with the babe on the ticket.” :puke:

For Hillary, it was one relentless attack after another at the hands of these partisan assholes. Remember the Whitewater hearings (aka witch hunt) and other Ken Starr-led inquisitions? For these hypocrites to pretend to empathize with and capitalize on Hillary's second-place finish is a real stretch to put it kindly.

They're only hope of winning is trolling for progressive-minded Hillary voters with a right-wing idealogue whose only commonality is in gender-based anatomy. Unfortunately for the GOP campaign, and fortunately for the rest of us, the overwhelming majority of the 18,000,000 "targeted" voters will not be taking the bait.

84. You know...
I don't like HRC in the slightest (or Bill for that matter), and I was unsure of Obama until I listened to what he had to say last night. So for a long time now, I've had no dog in this race whatsoever.

But from the first I heard that McCain had selected this woman, I knew it was nothing but calculated to try to lure the disaffect HRC supporters. And I thought, anyone who would fall for this is doing nothing but selling their country out totally, not the party...the country, period. Oh, and their fellow females of the species, too.

I would hope those who really supported HRC wouldn't fall for such a transparent charade as this. But I gotta say that some of them that I heard interviewed on NPR during the lead-up to the convention just might do it. The ones that said they'd vote for McCain just might go along with this ruse. You know why? Because ever last one of them I heard interviewed did nothing but whine about themselves and what they wanted, and what they had done for the women's movement all those years, and for HRC's campaign. Oh, how hard they had worked and for nothing! Waaaaaaa! Those are the ones that will do it because, ya know it was always all about them to begin with and never about what is going to be the best choice in this election.

I work in a place with many of the zealously religious right occupying the halls. And I tell you what, the men weren't sure how they felt about it (did I mention they are all senior citizens?) but the really wacky zealots were saying that Palin's a Christian woman and so they feel they must, must, must help get McCain elected.

Anyone who considers themselves an independent or a Dem, or even just woman, should take it upon herself to make sure that does not happen...for their country and their fellow women.

89. I've never recommended a post before, I just don't agree with the concept, but......
THIS one I did recommend. I think it sums up the opinion of many Clinton supporters, and the fact that their principles and ideals outweigh the fact that Hillary Clinton is a woman. Being male, female, black, white, Jewish, Christian, etc. etc. is so irrelevant if the policies of a candidate are wrong. In Hillary Clinton's case (and Barack Obama's as well) either one would be the best candidate against John McCain. That we have Biden too is overwhelmingly compelling.

McCain thinks that just because he picked a woman (a CONSERATIVE, narrowminded woman at that) he'll get a big part of those 18 million voters? He forgets that those 18 million primary voters are DEMOCRATIC primary voters. They're democrats and voted for a (woman) candidate because they agreed with her DEMOCRATIC positions on the issues, not simply because she is a woman. Republicans may be, but Democrats just aren't that shallow!

I particularly like your warning, "John McCain and Sarah Palin, be aware - - you are standing on the tracks, and the Democratic train is coming. Oh yes it is. We are united, we are Democrats together, and we are unstoppable. The wisest thing that either of you two nincompoops could do would be to get the hell OUT OF THE WAY."

Great job!!

However, I am loving the spectacle of the GOP "faithful" tap dancing and trying to slather enough lipstick on this pig.

It's a gimmick. It's transparent. It's desperate.

Not to mention he kicked the shit out of his own talking points about Obama's supposed lack of experience for the job.

He puts a zero national experience, zero military experience, zero foreign policy experience, Big Oil owned beauty queen, one 72 year old heartbeat away from the presidency!? Batshit crazy, my friends!

What worries me about Palin is not her overwhelming vileness (her record is essentially Jesse Helms with tits) but how the MSM will treat her. Given that she's fairly young, vaguely physically attractive and able to speak conherantly, I'm worried the MSM is going to fawn all over her. And you know that I think the people are dumb enough to believe it.

142. She won't last to November
I'm not going back on my prediction that McCain won't last as a candidate till November. But now am throwing in that Palin won't either. A week or two after the hoopla at the Repug convention, she will be found to have a skeleton in her closet and dropped (not very well vetted), with a NEW VP candidate appt.made by McCain.

Watch for that new VP candidate to be the REAL presidential nominee when McCain has "Health problems" around the middle of Oct., too late to get the dirt on the VP replacement, who will get sympathy vote, it could even be another female.

163. She already does have a skeleton...
...as she's under investigation in Alaska for, get ready, ETHICS violations related to Ted Stevens.

And this skeleton was not even in the closet - it was OUT IN THE OPEN, decaying flesh and all covering the bones, stinking up the place.

There could be one of two things going on here:

1. The RepubliCANTS are punting this election and prepping for 2012;
2. Your scenario above, where Grampaw McSaime chooses somebody else.

One thing about the sympathy vote - considering the economy, the Middle East, and everything else that the 'CANTS have dumped on us, do you think that there will be much of a sympathetic mood come November, should Grampy either bite it or head to the funny farm?

152. But---many OBAMA supporters CONTINUE to BASH HILLARY here. . .
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 12:16 AM by brensgrrl
I've been told to get on the "mothership and leave North America," and my husband has been
informed quite eloquently that he is "a stupid Son of a Bitch who needs an Checkup from the
Neckup," and that the Democtratic Party doesn't need the Clintons anymore.
He is switching from Democratic to Independent at the next chance for voter
registration. He will not vote Obama in the fall, but will write-in Hillary or "none of the above:
in the GE. After the bashing he took from Obama people, I cannot blame him. He is very
bitter now.

A lovely post, but a lot of people here on DU find it wonderful to bash Hillary whenever
necessary or possible, or else they bash her supporters, or else they believe that women in general
need to sit quietly when their children are trashed for illicit
sexual activity--especially their female children.

Nevertheless, I agree--get ready for the whole damned kitchen, and especially when that kitchen sink falls on
the daughters and sons of the political challengers! If there is little dirt to be found on the challenger's
plate, one can always involve the kids and abuse them.

164. From an Alaskan: Do Not Underestimate Palin -- She Is A Shark
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=0&threadid=2944135&pagenumber=9#post348459360

stormrider
Sep 18, 2003

Quote:

As a born & raised Alaskan, today has been tumultuous day.

My cell started ringing at rear end-crack:30 this morning (Alaska is -1 Pacific, -4 ET) with the rumor mill, and then a little later the confirmed WTF calls. Friends and family from all over the country calling to ask about our Gov.

It was of course impossible to go back to sleep after that, so I've been tired all day. But lack of sleep isn't what caused the looming sense of dread I've felt all day.

While the national media and some democrats have had a field day with the Palin VP pick, most Alaskan dems have been wandering around dazed and disoriented, feeling like the rug was pulled out from under us.

My plea is "Don't underestimate her."

I worked on the Tony Knowles gubernatorial campaign 2 years ago that Sarah emerged from with a huge portion of the vote. A little back story: Frank Murkowski, our ex-senator turned Gov (who appointed his daughter, Lisa Murkowski to replace him) was running for reelection, even though he was pretty unpopular. The Dems decided to run Tony, a popular ex-Governor to beat Frank. Sarah, a relative unknown, was running in the primary against Frank and a wide field of well-liked Alaskan politicians, and was treated like a joke, right up to the primary election night when it became clear that she was the Republican candidate.

The general election season continued the theme. Andrew Halcro, the independent, and Tony Knowles, the dem, both did their best to ignore her. Both were vastly superior candidates, but Sarah managed to weasel her way into the hearts of Alaskans. No one took her as a serious threat. At debates her answers were always "The Palin Parnell team will hire experts to look into the best course of action", where Knowles and Halcro had the experience and knowledge to offer recommendations. And while everyone joked about the "hot factor" influencing voters, no one really expected the amount of "America's hottest Governor" stuff that developed.

To many of us it felt like the Democratic party didn't ever take her seriously. We all knew Sarah had a chance of winning, even a good chance, Alaska is a very red state after all, but no one predicted the landslide that developed, or her ability to maintain an 80% approval rating.

Sarah is a shark. She is smart, and she is shrewd. However, she comes across as extremely personable; you can't help but like her in person. She is a good public speaker, I've seen better from her in Alaska, and considering how little time she had to prepare for today's speech, I think we'll see much better from her in the near future.

The biggest mistake we can make is to write her off, ignore her, or think she won't bring anything to the campaign. Quit with the jokes and the remarks about how cute and quaint she is. Stop with the pats on the back and the hurr hurr stuff.

The experience debate disappears now, let it disappear. It seems many Dems feel a vindictive need to bring up the experience issue after it's been applied to Obama so many times. Don't. Experience is a non-issue, she won in Alaska by being the inexperienced, outside candidate, and the Rs will, and already have, argued that she has more "executive experience" than Obama anyways. This is an opportunity to take the experience issue off the table, lets take it.

Our job is to remember and remind everyone else that it is John McCain running for President and not Sarah Palin. This means dropping the "old and dying" stuff. The jokes and comments that McCain's VP might become president in the next 4 years. We don't want people thinking about Sarah as the President.

I say this because I believe Sarah could win if she were the one running for President. Sure she's from a small town in Alaska and has only been the Governor for 2 years, but it doesn't matter; she is as of today on the national stage. McCain's campaign will do its best to lead with the pretty, energetic woman and let you forget that he's the one that would sit in the big chair. People will like her, and she will be a name in the Republican party for quite a while now.

I've watched the blogs, discussions, and tv reports all day, and while national dems have regaled themselves in last night's speech from obama, and laughed about Sarah, and while the media has had its field day, I've relived the emotion of having Sarah shark us 2 years ago, and felt dread.

We are, as of today, 30 points down, and we're going to need to work hard to make this the victory it should be.

I hope to be proven wrong. I hope she ends up being a horrible pick, but my gut feeling is it won't be that easy, it never is when you're dealing with Alaskan politicians.

166. Alaska might be a geographically large state....
...but it's still a little pond. A shark? Maybe a piranha. I'm sure she has teeth; she'd have to in order to rise as quickly as she has, but let's not mistake her meteoric rise with Obama's. Palin might have a few daggers up her sleeve, but Obama's a kung fu master -- and Biden's a salty old Washington warrior. She's toast.

200. Judasdisney, thanks from the bottom of my heart for this info. I've
been able to infer some things about Mrs Palin and I've tried to put bits and pieces of information ogether to see if two and two would make four, and then I get online here and see your post.
Yes, I surmised this woman is dangerous and the campaign may not realize it, so I promise to get your post along with my conclusions and suggestions up to the proper VIP by Monday latest.

I have to take care of something right now but I'll try to come back here soon to document how and why I think we have a nest of evildoers -- Karl Rove, McCain, etc. -- and they are attempting to pull off the scam of the century. A scam that just might work.

Meantime, anything else you know for sure about her, please add it in this thread. Even stuff that seems insignificant because that just might be the missing piece we need.

Thank you, thank you !!!!!!

210. everyone who knows her is saying this
and I woke up to having emails full of warnings about her. she is EXTREMELY competitive and her extremism makes some of the things we've seen during other regimes look middle of the road-ish.

she is actually well suited to McCain in some ways, and they will work hard to maintain the status quo.

she is Patriarchal Barbie. they LOVE her. She will do their evil work under the guise of her beauty queen disguise.

We must prepare and work EVEN harder to make sure they do not come anywhere near the WH.

We must not underestimate her.

Yes, she is unqualified and stupid -- but when did that ever stop some of the worst dictators? In fact, stupidity is sort of required in order to think you're entitled to be the sole dictator. She is Bush with Breasts. Dumb, Driven, Extremist and not called the Baracuda for nothing.

People who were angry at Senator Clinton are now angry at YOU for comparing yourself to her--right or wrong, she's OURS. Clinton supporters who were hurting over the primaries are now furious with YOU for pretending that you're even fit to stand in her shadow, much less take her place in our hearts.

I spoke to my best friend last night about the election for the 1st time since Feb. We've had a moritorium on Obama/Clinton discussions because we'd both get past annoyed at each other for our different stances - she's a loyal no-back-down Hillary supporter who absolutely LOVES her. I was pissed at Hillary and moved to Obama after SC. We couldn't discuss it at all without jeopardizing our friendship. Last night, we got on the phone and together we fumed about this presumptuous ex-beauty queen twit who has the arrogance to say she'll finish Hillary's job of breaking the glass ceiling. HOW DARE SHE. We are now in total harmony over this.

My 85-year-old aunt, who didn't like Hillary, had a fit yesterday over this woman. Who does she think she is?! she said. Hillary worked hard and earned her 18 million votes - and cracks - and this nothing waltzes in on McCain's invitation and thinks SHE'S going to accomplish what Hillary just missed doing? Fucking outrageous! (the 'f' word is mine :) )

Yes, we are all COMPLETELY united now! I mirror Debbie Wasserman-Schult'z outrage - to the last word. I'm definitely insulted, and I didn't even vote for Hillary. Whatever I didn't like about the way she ran her campaign, she and Bill Clinton are OURS, and no matter what, she worked hard to earn those 18 million votes... it incensed me when she compared herself to her and I'll not forgive her. No breaks from me. Not now, not EVER.

Twit.

190. I can see Palin standing on a ladder
epoxying every one of those 18 million cracks in that glass ceiling.

I would have liked to have voted for a woman, but there were other candidates I felt closer to on the issues than Hillary.
Had she won, she would have had my vote, as would any other Dem. Nothing to do with gender.

The more I think about this, the more pissed off I get that they think I'd vote for an unqualified far-right Repug just because we both lack a Y chromosome.

199. K&R. I sure agree with all your points, especially about this choice ensuring Democratic unity.
The thought that those who supported Hillary Clinton as their first choice would vote for McCain just because he chose a woman for VP, as they're speculating on the news, is just ludicrous. I obviously haven't read all the posts on this thread, but this has to be the prevailing sentiment. They're speaking about this possibility, just this minute, on MSNBC, idiots. Sarah Palin has to be the "anti-Hillary," has absolutely nothing in common with her except for gender, and to imagine that women would vote for McCain just because he chose Palin is just as insulting and narrow-minded as it would be to assume that the American electorate would choose a candidate based on race.:eyes:

I agree that John McCain has sealed his fate with this decision. Even the most bitter Hillary supporter has to realize that this isn't a team whom they could support, since they are the polar opposites of Senator Clinton on both issues and beliefs. It also undermines McCain's main criticism of Obama, that he doesn't have enough "experience." The thought that this self-proclaimed "hockey mom" is just a heartbeat away from becoming The Leader of the Free World, and that John McCain isn't all that healthy to begin with, scares me to death, and should scare all Americans. I think that this misguided choice proves that John McCain's mind has also gone clear off the rails, to use your train metaphor.

But it should work to our advantage, as you said, since the choices are now crystal clear, as if they weren't before...:hi:

It's great this potential pitfall Palin presents can be turned to an obvious unification. To have John (c-word) McCain pick her in more than pandering, but an insult to the intelligence of the Hillary Clinton supporters. To just think of that bitter old man thinking "the c-words will vote for her just for being a c-word" is both a testament to his sexism vs. a counter to it. And it shows how just plain stupid he and his campaign are to think less of the wiser party (Democrats). This choice could haunt them.

If formal impeachment charges are rolled out against Palin, she could actually withdraw. That could be the first time in history, if not mistaken, a VP choice withdraws. If not she'd pull them down and we'd have an Obama landslide. If she does, I find it hard to see him recover regardless. Can't remember how many houses he has, forgot he was still married to his first wife when he filed for a marriage license with his mistress, and can't even pick the right running mate. And you want HIM to run the country?

That letter was great! My concern is that women have the most to lose or gain in this election but it sometimes appears to the press that we would rather just vote our gender than vote our mind. Your letter put it all into words what I think people forget. Great!

209. WELL SAID
Just like the rest of the republican party, she represents all that is insidious, superficial, and just plain evil. It AMAZES me how our system of justice and humanity would even ALLOW such an organization such as the republican party to exist! We MUST do everything in our power to do three things:

1. Categorize the republican party as a criminal organization under the RICO statutes
2. Indict, impeach, and incarcerate all officers and members for organized criminal activity
3. Ban the existence of the republican party.

Virtually EVERY argument and every grievance we have can be PREVENTED by instituting the above three steps. Pure and simple.

Has he already forgotten that he's spent the past few months attacking Obama for being too young and inexperienced? Or his is he simply taking orders from the Bush puppeteers? Either way, he's shot his credibility in the foot for us.
