Was this a last minute pick?
Did Pawlenty turn them down in the middle of the night? Otherwise it seems pretty bush league to leak Pawlenty's name last night, then leave both him and their republican news outlets hanging. The whole thing just seems very seat-of-the-pants.

1. I think McCain wanted Lieberman, but his advisors didnt
They probably gave him a list of "approved" VP candidates that included all the names discussed the last week.

In a fit of rage at being overruled on Lieberman, he chose the person with the lowest recommendation of those advisors.

2. It feels like it
It seems like there must have been a last minute tete-a-tete between McCain and his advisers after Obama's amazing speech blew everyone away. They had to come up with something to grab the headlines. I wonder just how much Palin was vetted or whether McCain just made a snap decision and will keep his fingers crossed.

3. I think he had picked Romney some time ago, but the houses flap....
made Mittens an unacceptable choice. So they had to find a plan B. But that doesn't explain why they didn't come up with someone else sooner--so maybe you're right about Pawlenty.

4. She's the only one that didn't say anything negative about McSame
Pawlenty said he'd support Bush if he only had a 2% rating - which is brutally honest since that's who the republicans serve.
Mitten's said some stuff about Obama being better than McCain - it was in the video thread.
