1. That would be the last nail in the McCain's coffin!
Can you imagine that? You're in a race where you're trying to claim that your opponent lacks the judgment to lead, then you decide to renege your very first official important decision as a presidential nominee. They'd have to make it look like Palin changed her mind, and even then, it'd be a glorious mess.

As much the obvious, desperate pandering, this was about getting Barack off the front page of every newspaper on the planet - in print and online.
