Brooks & Dunn on having their song used at last night's Obama speech.
ONLY IN AMERICA | 8/29/08
Official statement from Kix about the use of "Only In America" in last night's Democratic National Convention speech from Barack Obama:

"Seems ironic that the same song Bush used at the Republican convention last election would be used by Obama and the Democrats now. Very flattering to know our song crossed parties and potentially inspires all Americans." Kix Brooks - Brooks & Dunn

7. I am disgusted..
Obama/Biden using Bush's theme song. I thought the goal was to disassociate themselves with Bush, not the opposite.

21. Reagan didn't play "Born in the USA."
He wanted the rights to it, but Springsteen wouldn't give them to him.

10. Who's the idiot that makes the decisions?
Honestly why would the Obama campaign want to associate itself with Bush on any level?

I don't understand this.. This is like McCain being intro'ed to "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac.

11. Randi had a good explanation for that this afternoon
She saw it as Obama sticking it to Bush on purpose--taking back the country, taking back the White House, taking back even the song they used. To purposefully disassociate it from Bush and reassociate it with Obama. After she explained it that way, I thought it was a cool choice.

12. Stupid Choice
Stupid choice none the less, it doesn't fit his campaign at all, and it invokes memories and associations to Bush.. I can understand if he wanted to use it at a small campaign event in the heart of red Montanta or Texas, but to use it and invoke Bush and associate himself with Bush on a subconcious level is dangerous and stupid, especially when the mantra is "Change"

What a blunder.

14. I agree with you that it didn't fit
It was quite jarring, after all that great Motown music. But I don't think it was a lasting faux pas.

22. Lyrics from Only In America... They didn't fit?
Sun coming up over New York City
School bus driver in a traffic jam
Starin' at the faces in her rearview mirror
Looking at the promise of the Promised Land
One kid dreams of fame and fortune
One kid helps pay the rent
One could end up going to prison
One just might be president

Only in America
Dreaming in red, white and blue
Only in America
Where we dream as big as we want to
We all get a chance
Everybody gets to dance
Only in America

Sun going down on an La. freeway
Newlyweds in the back of a limousine
A welder's son and a banker's daughter
All they want is everything
She came out here to be an actress
He was a singer in a band
They just might go back to Oklahoma
And talk about the stars they could have been
Chorus

Yea that's totally inappropriate. Has nothing to do with the message of the night. Not an in your face to Bush when he promised the same thing. Totally didn't fit.

24. Woah, there, cowboy
I was agreeing with Murdock that it was an unusual choice of music style, considering the rest of the night had been rock and Motown. I wasn't talking about the lyrics.

29. Maybe I am a little sensitive
There are a lot of people around here who are quick to diss anything southern or country. I still need to ask though what was the matter with a country song? Rock, R&B and country are all equally recognized as unique American music styles (rock less so) and if you leave out country you leave out a third to a half of the country. Just sayin.

32. I understand
I get that way about show tunes! :D

Anyway, I can't speak for everyone, but I was taken by surprise when the song started playing because, as far as I could tell (although I didn't watch every moment of the convention), the convention was dominated by rock and Motown--and then the key music slot, right after the speech--BAM--country.

You're right that using country music is very inclusive and reminds people that it's not just rock fans and R&B fans who are for Obama! :hi:

23. Only In America doesn't fit his campaign?
How does it invoke memories of Bush? Did it hurt your sophisticated ears to have to listen to a country song?

Brooks and Dunn wrote a song about how everyone should have a chance in America. It's about the American dream and if you listen to the lyrics it applies to our present candidate for President. Sorry if the country melody upset you. Now please go find something substantial to bitch about.

18. They would be foolish to be upset
Obama speech beat our
American Idol
and the Olympics in Viewship
and that doesn't take into account people like me who were at jammed packed Obama Parties

I never really listen to the song before yesterday

It certainly can't hurt to have that much free press

19. I woulda used a Rocking version of America the Beautiful by Neil Young or something
or why not Rockin' in the Free World.

Maybe that's a little too depressing.

Also, then we'd get reamed because he's kinda Canadian.
