Meme memo:
Wrong:

"They're not really mad about Kerry's Vietnam service, they're mad about what he said when he got back"

Right:

"They're not really mad about Kerry's Vietnam service, they're mad about him opposing the war when he got back"

What the first one does is help spread the false meme that Kerry said something that was not true, or said something he should be ashamed of. The second construction puts the focus where it belongs -- Kerry did the right thing in protesting the Vietnam war.

1. kerry's 71 speech
As I understand it they are really mad because they feel they could have won the Vietnam war, but Kerry's speech is the reason Nixon pulled them out of the war. They also say his speech was played to POWs and the Wietnamese tortured them because of it. What they refuse to admit all this would have happened with or with out Kerry's input. They are just feeling like losers and want to blame someone.

2. One thing the O'Neill Vets don't understand
is why many of us were protesting in the first place. They think we were protesting them as individuals. Many people believed the rumors Nixon's minions spread about the protesters, spitting on the troops, and the crap they spread around about Kerry back then.

What the people who bought into these stories, don't understand is we were not protesting against them. We were protesting against Nixon and the Military Leadership, for what they did to them.

I was protesting because I didn't want to see any of my friends, go to Nam and not come back. I am protesting now, because it is over my dead body, that they will ever take my only son and I don't want to see anyone else lose their son or daughter, for a war that based on nothing but a pack of lies.

3. Does anyone blame Kerry for ending the was sooner?
I was in my 20's then. I remember how many people finally realized the America they loved was WRONG this time!

I think Kerry helped put an end to the insanity with his protests and testimony. Even the people I knew from the military who hated Kerry for protesting were very happy to see that thing come to an end. They all said the Washington military leaders ran the war WRONG!
