The "Miss Congeniality" Lie?
This was in Deb Peterson's column in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Saturday:

"ALASKA PIPELINE: Amy Gwin, 43, of University City, grew up in Alaska and competed in the Miss Wasilla, Alaska, competition in 1984 against GOP vice presidential choice Sarah Palin. Gwin said Friday that she won the Miss Congeniality award in the competition, although Palin's Wikipedia entry says she won the contest — and the Miss Congeniality award....

Gwin said she was not surprised when Palin became the governor of Alaska, but is astonished that she got the GOP nod for vice president. Asked whether she would support Palin because she knows her, Gwin said: "I wouldn't support her if she was my very best friend. I support Obama and don't share any of her (Palin's) politics. She's very shallow." Gwin is the director of agency relations for the Rodgers Townsend advertising firm."

19. I thought she won Miss Congeniality when she lost Miss Alaska
That would make more sense -- they tend to give Miss Congeniality as a kind of consolation prize, not to the winner.

At any rate, it needs to be checked.

11. Just a pitiful shame. Who lies about winning some dinky award?
I think an Alaskan DUer mentioned that Ms. Palin is a bit of a braggart.

12. i don't know squat about beauty pageants, but is it even possible to win both?
i thought miss congeniality was meant to be a sort of consolation prize. i would think they would automatically give it to the number two choice in the event that the number one choice actually won the entire competition.

14. In most competitions, they are completely unrelated.
"Miss Congeniality" is usually voted on by the contestants themselves, before the overall competition results are known.

13. Not quite a lie, but a misquote...
It seems that in the CNN article quoted in Wiki, she won the Miss Congeniality prize in the STATE pageant not the Wasilla one. Too bad people who write for articles like this can not read.

Congrats Amy and thanks for sticking with your convictions!

17. This shouldn't be a she said-she said thing.
There has to be proof somewhere-- microfiche of the local newspaper during the pageant or a ribbon or trophy or records from the pageant's historian. Someone just has to do the legwork.

18. Might not be a lie . . .
For what it's worth, from the little evidence I've been able to gather, I understand Palin won the "Miss Congeniality" title in the "Miss Alaska" contest, not the "Miss Wasilla" contest.
