Here is why my brother turned from mccain to obama
My brother was supportive of mccain over any democrat. My brother is a pragmatic, money oriented voter, not a social conservative.

I saw him today, and asked him casually about his support for mccain. He had great disdain for mccain's VP choice.

Then he shocked me by saying he had watched obama's speech Thursday night (and actually apparently the whole convention). He said he like obama because obama spoke about things in a way he had never heard before - for example, he said, Obama spoke of abortion and differences, but said here is what we can agree upon - and that agreement if implemented, furthers both our goals.

My brother, from a swing state, not only doesn't support McCain, but actually supports Obama. I have tremendous hope for our country.

1. Thanks for sharing
I believe as more folks hear Obama's message and realize his plans will help THEM, he will win--one vote at a time.

3. Which is why Obama's acceptance speech has to be shown over and over and over and over and over...
...up to and including Election Day. The more that the message gets out, the more people will be behind him.

5. Here is that part of the speech - I thought it was very effective:
"We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination. Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers. This too is part of America's promise - the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort."

6. It even reads remarkably well.
If Americans can listen to that and enough of them say, "Nah, I'll pass," to elect McCain, there truly is no hope for the country that I once loved.

9. I really loved that paragraph because I'm centrist like that too.
I used to not be able to articulate why I was pro-choice other than because I just knew being pro-life was just really anti-woman. But this is exactly why I'm pro-choice (I didn't realize until recently how lucky I was to have gotten a thorough sex education class). Also, I used to be liberal on gun positions as in no guns at all and then in realizing how unfair the gun laws would be for hunters just as the anti-abortion stances are unfair to women, plus the fact that I really distrusted the Bush government, I definitely saw the usefulness of why the Founding Fathers wrote in the Second Amendment.

I agree that McCain basically put himself first when he undercut the coverage of Obama's speech as Obama said a lot of stuff that lots of Americans, not just Democrats, should hear more often in this environment where the Bush administration's actions makes you despair all too often. I'd be okay with someone who listens to Obama speak and then chooses to vote for McCain as long as he recognizes and understands Obama's essential American message.

8. I had family night dinner at the Freeper-In-Laws tonight
and was REALLY surprised at my BIL lamblasting Rush, and saying that the VP pic has no experience. He doesn't like Biden either (never has, and he's lived in DE all his life - thinks he's a stuffed shirt), but he thinks he'll vote Ron Paul.

My MIL was ecstatic when she turned to me and and said "Did you hear that McCain picked his VP? Sarah ???" I said "Palin. Yeah, I heard. They make a good pair - Geezer and Gidget." She was not happy to hear some of the 'meat' of what we've found out so far - including the Dominionist/Assembly of God mention. She thinks maybe she won't vote at all.
