First thoughts: Split-screen convention

Posted: Sunday, August 31, 2008 11:29 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro

*** A split-screen convention: As the day wears on, we should be getting more detail on what the GOP convention will look like tomorrow with Hurricane Gustav approaching the Gulf Coast. Already this morning, we have confirmation that President Bush will most likely not be attending. Now that doesn't mean he won't address the gathering; it just means he's not coming to Minnesota in person. McCain and Palin are headed to Jackson, MS, at the invitation of Gov. Barbour, giving McCain another opportunity to not look like Bush. In many ways, while some may think Gustav is some sort of bad GOP omen, it's also an opportunity for McCain to show himself to be more attentive to a situation like this than Bush was during Katrina. The McCain camp knows they have a fine line to walk, needing to show compassion and leadership while also not trying to look like they are taking some political advantage. The fact is, the GOP convention is going to get some attention and the attention they get will likely be focused on recovery efforts and that could go a long way to healing the wounds caused by Bush during the Katrina fiasco.

selection too. You can't get much more "outsider" than Alaska, geographically anyway. :)

3. He's a republican shill which is a shame
I enjoyed him during the primaries (especially the early part) and then, last week, all of the benefit of the doubt was erased and it became clear to me that he is a right wing hack.

4. I don't understand how this is Chuck jumping the shark. He's just stating the obvious.
I appreciate more transparency in my MSM and Chuck's always struck me as very centrist and objective. He's not nearly as partisan as Fox or Keith (who I love but sometimes he is way too obvious and that turns off the independents).

5. I think he is very subtly making the point that McSame went down
there for a photo op, and that he knows he's using this as a political tactic.

6. Dan Abrams was just on MSNBC, talking to Chris Matthews on the phone
They both agreed that it makes McCain seem "different than Bush", so it helps him. Sad that no one cares to mention how McCain reacted during and after Katrina. I have a feeling that this talking point is going to be shoved down our throats this week.

8. "I went there in 2008 because I was busy enjoying cake with Bush the first time"
Never fear, the truth will be buried under layers of how fearless McBush leaped into the breach to save helpless victims.

7. Damn straight.
They are even reporting on the cable news stations that McCain, himself, may not attend his own party's nominating convention!

Talk about proving how trashed the 'Republican brand' is -- even their presumptive nominee is looking for excuses not to go!

17. When I used to watch Chuck Todd's reports on C-Span
I could hardly contain myself, as he dismissed every repuke scandal
as democratic partisanship, while displaying any democrats dirty laundry as proof of corruption.
I like him better now. But I see him as republican.
