It's the perfect "The Emperor has no clothes" scenario.
But it's not McCain that the "subjects" are kowtowing to, it's their ideology... their dogmatic superstructure.
Everyone circling around the McCain camp, from the Fox News talking heads to the RNC paid cheerleaders are staking their reputations on the apathy and ignorance of the American electorate.
The GOP dependence on NEOCON leadership has resulted in many of the greatest failures our country has ever faced, and with their change in direction, they were that close to completely alienating their fundamentalist Christian base. But now the ship has righted itself.
McCain has to walk a fine line of sublimating the results of the NEOCON Bush/Cheney foreign policy environment into one that closely resembles a direction wanted by the fundie base. Sort of like turning waste water into boxed wine. To do this, he has to create a facade. That's where Gov. Palin comes in. Her selection marked a "return" to "traditional values" and a departure from the secular policies which indicated a rejection of the fundamentalist religiosity.
McCain/Palin is a manifestation of the GOP's utter failure as a governing entity. Rather than proffering a team that has a well established record of competence and confidence, they are using the time-honored political tools of smoke and mirrors and sleight of hand. In other words, when one takes a look at the Republican ticket, anyone not faked out by the pandering to fundamentalism or is unwilling to play politics, one will see and declare that there is no "there" there.
The GOP has reverted to a back to basics mode, in order energize the faithful. This is one tactic, the "face". The "hand" will now work behind the scenes to undermine the legitimacy of the political process in order to subvert the will of people, of whom are quite dissatisfied with the country's direction under Republican stewardship.
So, for the next week, as speaker after speaker at the RNC tries to convince the American people that the last eight horrible years were merely a figment of their imaginations, think about this: When it comes to things that really matters, these people are utter failures.
With the opportunity of giving this country something to truly believe in, with the candidacy of Barack Obama and Joe Biden, it will finally allow people who want to end their suspension of disbelief and finally change the direction of the country to one for the better.
