1. None
We're already losing two Senate seats. I think a third is excessive and risky.

I want a filibuster-proof majority, dammit!

25. We are hopefully losing two Senators - but that does not mean we lose the Senate seats
both Illinois and Delaware have DEMOCRATIC governors - they will pick new Democratic senators. This is also not a reason against HRC- New York has a Democratic governor. The question is whether a cabinet position is better for her than being Senator.

The plus is she is really a very junior Senator and has no committee chair - and I don't thing Biden leaving changes that for her. (She is not on SFRC or judiciary where Biden is chair (and could be chair). Even on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, where Kennedy resigning (which he clearly does not intend to do - she will not be near to most senior - Dodd would be and might choose this over both Banking and SFRC.) Being in the cabinet might be more powerful, but she would serve at the wish of the President, he could fire her if they disagree or she could simply be ignored on setting policy. As a Senator, she is independent.

40. Except that special elections will take months before those seats are filled
Being just short of a filibuster-proof majority for four or six months of the new Democratic Congress with a Democratic president would really blunt our initiatives.

27. I can think of many in the Senate that would meet the test of
constitutional expert better than she. There are also others who have shown over long careers great integrity, such as Feingold and Kerry. But, the better choices are not in the Senate, but in the judicial branch.
The best nominees have a judicial record - she and most other Senators don't.

18. forget it. Put Howard Dean in as Sec of HHS. He's got the resume
on health care and the experience of successfully running large organizations (a state and the DNC) that Hillary doesn't. Plus he's a physician. Hillary should stay in the Senate.

28. No one will be the new "Ted Kennedy", but there are other people
far more likely to be the de facto leader of the Kennedy wing - starting with the other MA Senator, with more seniority, more accomplishments, and a stronger advocate than HRC. Other possibilities include Durbin and Dodd.

I don't think that Bill Clinton could be confirmed to the Supreme Court. He would be filibustered by every Republican and many Democrats would likely join in. Lying under oath is not something that a future Supreme Court justice would do. (In fact, I seriously doubt Obama would nominate him.)

29. Too little seniority in a seniority conscious body
Not to mention, there is no reason the Senate will give a failed Presidential candidate a consolation prize. Look at the precedents, McGovern and Kerry both returned to the Senate - Kerry after a very narrow loss and the clear nominee of the party. I didn't see HRC arguing that Kerry should be majority leader, even though he had far more seniority than she does now.

37. Health Care is going to be The Issue, and she is our best champion

...and most trustworthy.

What I'd like to see, and what will be are, granted, two different things. But I don't want to see her pulled out of the fight into a cabinet post.

Don't start talking about Cabinet posts until after the election.

As for Hillary, she should be the leader of the efforts to push the health care bill through the Senate.

34. She's not qualified for that. It'll never happen. Also, she'd hate it.
It's for bookwormy, usually older semi-retired judges. It's a part-time job that consists mainly of sitting in a room and dictating legal opinions. Then they make extra money by giving speeches occasionally. They cannot give obvious political speeches.

She doesn't have the background as a judge, or even worked very long as a lawyer. She also doesn't have the temperament or personality for it.

She's an extrovert who does best in a public forum, openly advocating positions. Just the opposite of what a S.Ct. judge does.

I'd like to see Obama place into nomination, the name of Hillary Clinton for MAjority Leader of the Senate on January 3, 2009. I'd like to see Joe Biden second the nomination.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden WILL still be Senators when the 111th Congress starts. They'll remain Senators for seventeen days.

39. She needs to be point person in the Senate on Health Care reform.
She would kick ass on that. She's qualified for several cabinet posts but she'd be great to promote health care reform. We need someone with her experience and skills to push through a progressive health care plan. Health care reform is one of the most important issues. She could help the country out more by doing that than through a cabinet position.
