Breaking news : Sarah Palin's 16 year old daughter Bristol is pregnant
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 11:27 AM by rhombus
Wow.

http://thepage.time.com/2008/09/01/mccain-campaign-bristol-palin-is-pregnant/

Fundies are not going to like this one bit.

PS. And oh, it matters. To Fundies, this reflects very poorly on the parents. For a woman who has five kids and a soon to be granddaughter born to a teenage mom, that's the equivalent of adding gasoline to the fire. The shine is wearing off pretty fast from Sarah Palin. And if more moderate voters get to know her extremist positions on creationism and birth control, they are going to be really freaked out.

I'll never understand why some people can't figure out birth control.

108. Can you give me link where she directly says that?
I know she's anti contraception but if you can't afford it why force families to have the kid. It's like she's saying people can't have sex if you don't want to get pregnant even if you're married. She's mad and her husband must be repressed.

136. Here's a link to an article about Feminists For Life, which Palin belongs to.
http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/8/31/134127/530

The comments after this article reveal some uncertainty about Palin's stance on contraception. I found some references to her as "anti-abortion, pro-contraception", but I also found others claiming that both FFL and Palin are opposed to contraception, period.

Like much about Palin, the story keeps shifting as details come in.

26. I am sorry, but this lady is the political Britany Spears ...
She reeks of it, and there is NO WAY SHAPE OR form that the McCain can even begin to say the actually "vetted" her.

She is a trainwreck, and I repeat, should be the completely death of McCain's campaign - but the media will try to carry water for this disaster as long as it can.

68. My first thought too
Did the vetters know about this? Doubt it... If they did, and McCain still chose her, he is even more nuts that I thought. If Palin hid the fact, well... I guess McCain may be somewhat pissed, and maybe not even consider her a "soul mate" (as he mentioned a couple of times in the Fox interview yesterday) anymore.

Mother was not showing at 7 months. Bristol on the recent photos (allegedly at five months) looks bigger than her mother was at 7 months. And the rumors about Bristol being pregnant started before she was actually pregnant. You can't make shit like this up.

120. The only thing I can see this working with
are those people who tend to vote republican but aren't fundy and maybe consider themselves independent. I can see them being turned off by just way too much drama in Palin's life.

But the fundies? Will make the teen girl a hero for not aborting, they will conveniently ignore the abstinence failure angle, and will try to drum up sympathy for Palin for everything she's having to deal with.

(Which will lead right back to the too much drama argument, so they'd have to be really careful with that.)

God, this Palin woman was a STUPENDOUSLY bad choice.

I agree with you 100%. But I've said the same thing over and over again as this whole babygate thing has been going on, and people just don't care or don't want to believe it.

It's like nobody has been watching these idiots (the right wing fundie religious nuts) over the past 8 years to see that the only thing that makes them not vote for or to turn against a republican is finding out there's a chance they may have had gay sex.

88. Oh yeah, they will.
They'll be glad she's not getting an abortion, but they're not going to be happy about it all. And many will blame the parents, as they usually do.

At our evangelical Christian college, just having sex could get you punished, but getting preggers or getting someone preggers would get you kicked out of the school permanently. There are many who aren't going to be happy about this at all. Their leaders will try to spin it, sure, but talk to the rank-and-file. They're going to be ticked.

Not only is Palin inexperienced, but she has a pregnant teenage daughter, too? Too much drama for the pragmatic independent crowd. They're not going to want to trust the country to someone who couldn't keep her own daughter from getting knocked up.

106. Ok I can see that.
But it's crazy to think you can control everything your teenager does. Teens get pregnant, it happens in every kind of family imaginable. Families who have a healthy attitude toward sex, families who don't. Upper class, middle class, struggling, there's no one group immune to this.

I CAN see people feeling like there's too much drama surrounding Palin. That's an angle that could easily be pushed without seeming to attack the teen daughter and having it backfire. I do know people who wouldn't like all the drama.

or running for office.

And I'm not saying Palin deserves any sympathy. In my mind, she deserves nothing but scorn for her positions on the issues, killing a lactating moose, tons of stuff.

I was just saying I could SEE people feeling sorry for her if they saw her getting attacked for her pregnant teen daughter.

got pregnant with my nephew out of wedlock. Funny thing, so did her fundie sister.

This doesn't bother me much, other than I know being a young mom is a tough row to hoe, even though there are plenty of successful young moms. What does bug me is that Palin is choosing to thrust this young lady into the spotlight by accepting the VP nom.

She's asking for privacy for the girl and her fiance, and they do deserve privacy. However, Palin herself stripped away any illusion of privacy for her daughter by accepting the running mate position in the first place.

I know plenty of Fundies who have had kids who get knocked up out of wedlock. (Or do the knocking.) As long as the new parents agree to toe the line and become more Fundamentalist than thou, it's all good. This happened to my boss's son (who married into a Fundie family after his girlfriend pregnant). Now they're just one big happy cult. All is forgiven.

I read somewhere yesterday that when Sarah found out she was going to be VP she had her daughter marry the father of her baby that day in quiet private ceremony.

I was reading so many threads I don't know where I read that.

there is no way she can cover this one. Its going to look bad for her just from the trying to hide it to protect her ambition.

Another example of why abstinence only education does not work, but other than that, it has to be a bit difficult and embarassing being a pregnant 16 year old with your mom as the VP nominee. I wonder if she is really excited about her mom being a VP nominee...I mean, I'm sure she's proud and everything, but it does seem to have happened very suddenly...all of the sudden, your family is scrutinized on the national level.

142. No, because the core "babygate" question remains:
What the hell was going on when she traveled at 8 mos pregnant with a very high risk pregnancy, had her water break, and still took forever and half a continent to get to a hospital? Granting that it was probably her baby, is she that reckless? Or does she like to tell whoppers (while still being reckless enough to travel at that stage)?

So many of their kids have babies out of wedlock because of their abstinence-only sex education... and this is one family that didn't go down the "abortion is murder unless it screws up MY daughter's life" road. I don't agree with their stance on choice, but at least they're walking the walk.

It's kind of Britney-esque for the family of a VP candidate, but it's not all that horrifying or unusual. I doubt it'll sway anybody one way or the other.

abort either. Besides, Bristol is not running for anything.

In Palin's shoes, I would not be putting Bristol under this scrutiny, even if Bristol said it was okay, though. And that may occur to the neo theos. It reflects on whether Sarah puts her personal ambition above everything, as she did with endangering the Downs Syndrome baby.
