The seemingly never asked question regarding the abortion debate...

"Senator McCain and Governor Palin, should, during your administration, Roe v. Wade be overturned and abortion made illegal, what criminal punishment would you deem appropriate for the doctor and mother who have or attempt to have an abortion performed?"

Seriously, because remember, criminalization of an action deters no one without an appropriate punishment. Should they be charged with murder or manslaughter for having an abortion or their conspiracy equivalents for an attempted abortion? No one ever seems to ask this question and I'd really like to hear what the candidates have to say.

1. this was asked at a republican debate

the general consensus was the woman wouldn't be puinished, but the doctor would be. I can't remember Mccain's reponse but I don't think he disagreed with that.

Granted, I think we realize that but I doubt many Americans who support overturning do.

And desperately pulled a coathanger trick like the "good old days." Would she be arrested leaving the hospital? If she lived? Or what if she got black market morning after pills.

this is really not the government's job to be policing everyone's uterus, duh.

And how much would criminalization of this cost exactly?

Actually if Roe was overturned, it would be up to the states....which, when all these fundie states have abortion laws requiring travel to other states etc., makes for later abortions, or contraband abortion drugs. GREAT! GREAT IDEA!

if life begins @ conception like McCain believes, and at conception a fetus has civil rights....what happens if a mother smokes, drinks, drives w/out a seatbelt? even before she knows? all punishable?

Mom and Dad, who knew to be charged with aiding and abetting a criminal, just like other criminal acts. Bet people would think twice about making it illegal under these circumstances.
