The age of consent in Alaska is 16
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_North_America

Which is a bummer, because otherwise this could have gotten, uh, sticky.

IMHO, the "baby switcheroo" story was insane, and now that it is disproven, it is being used by the MSM against us. We are the evil far left mob who told untrue rumors to smear a Down's syndrome baby.

The daughter being pregnant, again imho, is another story entirely, because religious rightwing nuts love to try to regulate people's private lives and this exposes their hypocrisy.

That being said, Mary Cheney, open lesbian, didn't seem to have much effect on the public's perception of the GOP's hypocrisy.

So I wonder if a daughter of a Veep candidate deciding NOT to have an abortion and then marrying her boyfriend is really going to have much play with swing voters.

But, I do think it's a valid issue. If Palin believes that the government should pass laws proscribing our sexual behaviour, what was her daughter doing violating scriptural law against sex before marriage?

1. NOT TRUE that the rumor was only pushed by liberal bloggers.

McCain complained about mainstream media outlets in his statement, too.

5. Sorry for being unclear. I edited my post. Here are more details:

A senior McCain campaign official said the McCain camp was appalled that these rumors had not only been spread around liberal blog sites and partisan Democrats, but also were the subject of heightened interest from mainstream news media.

The tradition media was quietly all over this story.

3. Also, in an answer to your question as to where the rumor started, it was the Anchorage Daily News
blog:

Is Sarah Palin really pregnant?
It is curious that Gov. Palin is not showing when it is "claimed" she is seven months pregnant.

Is Sarah Palin really pregnant?
Joan-I'm with you. If you look at photos of her last month and this month it doesn't appear that Sarah is pregnant. Could it be that she is covering for someone else in the family? In my day that was common. I knew a friend that was raised by his grandparents.

This was an Alaskan story from start to finish. The only thing liberal bloggers did was cut and paste.

4. are you now trying to tell us that Kos and DU weren't going nuts
over the last few days trying to prove the "switcheroo" story?

6. They were airing a rumor that came from Alaska. I didn't take
part in it myself because I found it inconclusive, but I agree with Andrew Sullivan on this: since John McCain did not vet his VP choice, it was inevitable that the internet would. And quite frankly, this ain't no beanbag, ruggerson. This is a presidential campaign where no privacy is allowed. I don't like it, but be serious: it's been this way for a very long time.

8. I agree that they are going to get no privacy
and, frankly, they shouldn't. I just think we should pick out fights wisely. The teenage daughter of a religious rightwinger being pregnant has the potential for real traction in the double standard that it presents. But the "switcheroo" debacle was not smart politics.

7. Alaska has twice the rape rate as the rest of the nation
and Palin is opposed to abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

9. Nobody ever mentions the Age of Majority
And most often, the Consent laws of a particular state come with caveats - usually the parent's permission must be sought.

Regardless, the Age of Consent has nothing to do with adulthood and responsibility. The Age of Majority does.

I'm not speaking about Palin's daughter so much as pointing out the ridiculousness of using consent laws to justify sex with minors.
