Obama “Offended” By Claim About Palin Rumors

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Speaking in Monroe, Michigan, the Senator denies his campaign is behind rumors about Sarah Palin’s youngest child.

“I am offended by that statement. There is no evidence at all that this involves us.”

Vows to fire any staffer found to be spreading them.

Notes that his own mother had him when she was 18, and tells reporters to “back off” the story.

Obama Transcript From Jay Newton-Small

BO: So I just wanted to give you a quick update on what I have heard in terms of the hurricane. This morning we put up on our website donations to the American red cross, we are starting to gather volunteers should they be necessary. At this point we are hopeful that some of the worse damage that could have occurred will not occur. Everybody I am sure has been monitoring what is taking place at the various cable outlets. I spoke to Mitch Landrieu the Lieutenant governor on the ground as well as FEMA, their assessment is that they won’t know exactly what is taking place for the next five hours or so. They will be as soon as the storm passes will start to send people out assuming it is safe. Their search and rescue teams will be deployed as well when it is appropriate. Overall it appears that the levees have held and the walls that you have been seeing, the industrial canal walls seem to be solid. Undoubtedly there is going to be some flood damage, but we don’t know how much that is going to be yet. I also talked to FEMA as well as governor Brettice in TN about housing and shelter for those that have been evacuated. It appears that that has gone smoothly and I commend FEMA and the governors in the region for cooperating so effectively. We don’t anticipant that there are going to be any short term problems, but I think what we are insisting on is making sure that as quickly as possible that people can make an assessment and get back in their homes. So with that let me just open it up to a couple questions.

Jake Tapper: Governor Palin and her husband issued a statement today saying that their 17 year old daughter Bristol who is unmarried is 5 months pregnant. Do you have a comment?

BO: I have heard some of the news on this and so let me be as clear as possible. I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics, it has no relevance to governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18. And how family deals with issues and teenage children that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that is off limits.

Jeff Zeleny: an unnamed McCain advisor as reported on Reuters that the despicable rumors have been spread on blogs some even with Barack Obama’s name on them.

BO: I am offended by that statement, there is no evidence at all that any of this involved us. I hope I am as clear as I can be. So in case I am not, let me repeat, we don’t go after people’s families, we don’t get them involved in the politics, it is not appropriate and it is not relevant. Our people were not involved in any way in this and they will not be. And if I ever thought it was somebody in the campaign that was involved in something like that they would be fired. Ok. Alright guys. Thank you.

You chose a bad example since we still have an idiot president.

But I must know... Who? Who's this everyone you speak of? I don't know anyone outside of DU who assumed the connection between the * and swift boaters. It's in your own head that anyone cares. Freepers are going to believe what they want whether it's true or not. It's pretty funny that you, alone, read more into his denial than what was actually written. Disavowed...

But no... I have not a single post on this pregnancy issue, so you would be wrong, once again. Apparently, you do have a concern about how people will see you. To, somehow, make the connection that Obama denying McCain's allegation is in some way disavowing DU speaks volumes. According to your post count, I figured you already assumed that in a Democratic forum, we're free to exchange ideas whether you agree with them or not. There it is... I guess I was wrong.

Further into the story, he comments that no one working for him is behind this or they'd be fired.

His campaign does not need to be involved in this in any way at all. If the blogs and the media feel like running with it, it's out of his hands, but the campaign shouldn't have anything to do with it.

not sure why you choose to use the term "followers" right out of the Rush Limbaugh "messiah" meme, but be that as it may, people on DU are free to say anything they choose. It is a marketplace of ideas. Nothing that is said here can be attributed to the campaign, despite the weight some here give their own opinions.

55. no. she is running on being "attractive" and a "real mom". that is it
so if she did not make good choices in that role as a real mom, .... then you show it.

kinda like claiming she is a feminist (as she states) when her hubby sits in the meetings and makes the decision for her. no feminism in her. you go after the conditioning the repugs are using to sell the woman

kerry was a war hero, they made him a coward. they used lies. we use her own words

79. That is totally unfair. Her candidacy--which I oppose--is not just based on that
McCain picked her for several reasons:

1) He sees her as a "maverick" and thinks it will help give him his maverick image back.

2) Her job approval numbers are sky-high.

3) She is popular with the GOP base.

There are other reasons, including her gender. But it isn't fair to belittle her or her presence on the ticket any more then we would criticize any other Republican. This election should be about our agenda versus their's.

For the record, several DU posters, including myself, knew who Sarah Palin was months ago and predicted that McCain would select her as his running-mate.

we also have every right to hit the opposition with this ourselves. Palin is fresh meat and she's going down. :D

to defend himself. I'm pretty sure that's not what a supporters function is....

I won't be a part of it.

38. Of course, that's the way he'd handle it..he's Obama.
What would corporate media and shithead fundies for mccain do if it were someone in the upper echelons of the Dems during their heated, exploited race for the white house?

45. I salute the character of our nominee.
I feel little inclination to follow his lead though.

50. Doesn't stop McCain camp from trying to blame Obama
A senior McCain campaign official said the McCain camp was appalled that these rumors had not only been spread around liberal blog sites and partisan Democrats, but also were the subject of heightened interest from mainstream news media.

"The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs, some even with Barack Obama's name in them, is a real anchor around the Democratic ticket, pulling them down in the mud in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their 'campaign of change,'" a senior aide said.

58. O. yeah! McCain's Machiavellian team can't handle a checkmate when the MSM gets involved.
Those McInsane advisor loons must be so narcissistic and elitist that they cannot handle it when something spins out of THEIR control. I guess they will be DEMANDING a meeting with the heads of whatever, DEMANDING something or other. Blah, blah, blah

Just re-run the somber McInsane's clip of how he will run a clean campaign. Yeah...right! LOL

61. Well, since McCain doesn't understand the "Internets"...
He probably doesn't realize that any guy with "ImObama123" for a screen name probably really ISN'T Obama himself. He is just 72, has never turned on a computer and doesn't know how it works.. so how can it be his fault if he doesn't understand this?

Of COURSE Obama should be able to control 10,000,000 angry liberal bloggers and be able to censor everything they type.. duh. :eyes:

67. Again the rumor was from Alaska, and went viral on the internets
The Obama campaign had nothing to do with it. They would NEVER touch it.

78. Obama Transcript From Jay Newton-Small

Thank you.
