Obama to Media, Politicos on Palin Pregnancy Story: "Back Off!"

September 01, 2008 2:28 PM

At a brief press availability in Monroe, Mich., ABC News asked Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., if he had any response to Gov. Sarah Palin's statement that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter Bristol is pregnant.

"Let me be a clear as possible: I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people's families are off limits," Obama said, "and people's children are especially off limits.

"This shouldn't be part of our politics," he continued, "It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor, or her potential performance as a vice president.

"And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories," he said. "You know my mother had me when she was 18, and how a family deals with issues and, you know, teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that's off limits."

Asked about the insinuation from the McCain campaign that the liberal bloggers trafficking in rumors about Palin write for websites that mention Obama, the senator said, "I'm offended by that."

The Democratic presidential nominee said, "There is no evidence at all that any of this involved us. I hope I am as clear as can be – so in case I’m not, let me repeat: We don't go after people's families, we don't get them involved in the politics. It's not appropriate and it's not relevant."

Concluded Obama before getting on his campaign bus headed to Milwaukee, Wisc., "Our people were not involved in any way in this and they will not be. And if I ever thought that it was somebody in my campaign that was involved in something like that, they'd be fired."

-Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller

OUR candidate has judgment AND compassion.

On Edit: Heh. I know he's not President yet. But it sure does sound good ;)

1. Good thing none of us work for him.

Absolutely the right thing for him to say. And, I will continue to say what I wish as well. Free speech and all that.

9. I think you and I are on the same page as this.
The whole story stinks. The timing? Stinks. That she would do this to her child? Stinks x two.

11. Last I looked, none of us was running for President.
Obama said the right thing, but I bet he's delighted at this revelation.

politically, I'm sure he knows all this drama does help his campaign...

but as he is such compassionate person, I'm sure he is acutely aware
of the potential for pain and disgrace this situation contains.

8. Freedom of the press and of the internet trumps whatever good-intentioned Obama says

Let's not forget that the stories about Palin's lies on her pregnancy all originated in her hometown of Wasilla.

Sarah Palin wants to abolish reproductive rights, that makes her a legitimate target.

16. Classy move on the part of Barack Obama
Unfortunately for the McAnus campaign, however, I'm under no such constraints and will continue to shoot off my big mouth whenever and wherever I see fit!

18. He's going to win, and take the high road.
There's more than one high road. But I think what he's doing is going to unify not only Dems, but others.

I'm just going to sit back and learn from this man.

Obama is a dream come true.

And I don't think high road means being weak.

There are Palin stories that are worthy of scrutiny. I think Obama is going to lay off personal subjects. Let's see where the Alaskan pipeline story goes.

19. Obama is right.
Her preggo daughter is not the issue. There are more important issues to talk about.

1. Troopergate!!
2. Bridge-to-Nowhere and her lies about it.
3. She's a Buchananite? So says Pat Buchanan.
4. Hired a guy with a sexual harrassment charge on his resume.
5. Wasthisclose to Senator Ted Stevens.
6. Left Wasilla $20 million in debt because of her incompetent handling of a "must have" Sports Complex.
7. Supported Obama's energy plan!
8. Supported Obama in Alaska -- said she was happy to see him pulling ahead of McCain. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/30/palin-was-excited-that-ob_n_122632.html
9. No birth control for married couples. So in the world of Sarah Palin, all woman would have no choice but to risk getting pregnant whether they want to or not, and women over 40 must risk getting pregnant even though doing so could result in the birth of child with Downs Syndrom or some other birth defect. I guess we can get rid of half the gynecologists since Sarah will be in charge of all medical decisions.

And all this is before she's been properly vetted! Can't wait to see what else crops up.
