Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act and McCain/ Palin position
Public opinion polls consistently show that more than 90 percent of Americans support teaching comprehensive sex education in high schools and in middle or junior high schools.<17,18> In one recent poll, 94 percent believed that teens should be taught about birth control and preventing pregnancy; and seven in 10 believed that government funding should go to more comprehensive programming.<18>

But it's not just abortion policy that has Democrats up in arms over Palin. In that same 2006 questionnaire, the soon-to-be governor said she would fund abstinence-only education programs in schools. "The explicit sex-ed programs," she added, "will not find my support." The stance, which reflected the priorities of the GOP, nevertheless led to an incredulous editorial in the Juneau Empire.

Q: “What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.”
