I've never seen a meltdown like this before...
I mean, it's like watching a comedy of errors. This has got to be one of the biggest missteps in election history.

Did McCain even THINK before making the call and asking her to join the ticket? It was like he just went up to some random stranger on the street and said, "Hey, you, you're my VP candidate, ok?".

20. I think her AIP association, along with the Troopergate
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 06:20 PM by Phx_Dem
investigation are,so far, her biggest problems. Somehow, I don't think this quote from Palin is going to go over too well on the old campaign trial!

UPDATE: This quote was from the AIP founder, not Palin.

“I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America or her damned institutions.”

34. Hate to quibble, but your link says it's not a Palin quote. It's a quote from
the founder of the AIP.

But there's also a video of the head of the org in 2008 claiming her as a member -- still -- and supporting her as the governor.

7. Everything.
She's linked to a group that wants Alaska to secede from the United States.

Her husband has a DWI.

She's been linked to the Bridge to Nowhere.

She's been caught using earmarks in Alaska.

It just never ends.

19. Palin is associated with a secessionist group the AIP. And...
She has a court case against her for abusing her power as Governor.

Then there's a problem with corruption in her involvement with Ted Stevens.

Plus there's the $20 million ruin she left Wasilia when she was Mayor.

I know there's another issue I can't remember. Oh and she's part of a Dominionist church which believes in rapture and all that jazz.

4. I am Starting To Think
Republicans know the mess of the world they have made and that the next President's odds of succeeding are so bad that they are throwing this election and are already looking ahead to 2012. It's the only explanation I can come up with for what they are doing.

It's not them who matter, remember, they still rally behind Bush.

It's the other 90% of the country that matters and this isn't going to look good at all.

going to be the runaway landslide winner of the GOPer nom and the White House--they ignored his cancer, and the fact that he is a lazy fuck with no real desire to be Preznit. And he bombed, big time. They don't see reality.

28. I didn't know this, but John McCain has a big gambling addiction
This article in The New Republic mentions it. McCain is an uncontrollable gambling fool, apparently. His aides have been tryng to keep that addiction under wraps during the campaign. McCain was probably jonesing to lay down a big bet and that's when the long shot Sarah Palin suddenly came to mind.

http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump/archive/2008/07/06/john-mccain-s-gambling-problem.aspx

"...In the past decade, has played on Mississippi riverboats, on Indian land, in Caribbean craps pits and along the length of the Las Vegas Strip. Back in 2005 he joined a group of journalists at a magazine-industry conference in Puerto Rico, offering betting strategy on request. "Enjoying craps opens up a window on a central thread constant in John's life," says John Weaver, McCain's former chief strategist, who followed him to many a casino. "Taking a chance, playing against the odds." Aides say McCain tends to play for a few thousand dollars at a time and avoids taking markers, or loans, from the casinos, which he has helped regulate in Congress. "He never, ever plays on the house," says Mark Salter, a McCain adviser. The goal, say several people familiar with his habit, is never financial. He loves the thrill of winning and the camaraderie at the table.

Only recently have McCain's aides urged him to pull back from the pastime. In the heat of the G.O.P. primary fight last spring, he announced on a visit to the Vegas Strip that he was going to the casino floor. When his aides stopped him, fearing a public relations disaster, McCain suggested that they ask the casino to take a craps table to a private room, a high-roller privilege McCain had indulged in before. His aides, with alarm bells ringing, refused again, according to two accounts of the discussion.

"He clearly knows that this is on the borderline of what is acceptable for him to be doing," says a Republican who has watched McCain play. "And he just sort of revels in it." ..."

29. He heard "extremely popular governor" and "anti- abortion born again" and that's all he needed to
know

My friends in Alaska are saying "of course she's popular, we profit when oil goes up." Every resident of Alaska gets a windfall profit check from oil. It's bigger this year than ever before and state revenue from oil has balanced the budget.

It's not like she's a rocket scientist. Right time, right place.
