Andrea Mitchell just said Repub lawyers currently doing vet of Palin in Alaska
Source: TPM link to MSNBC video

"We had heard hints of this. But just moments ago, Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC said that Republican lawyers are currently doing a vet of Sarah Palin up in Alaska. We'll get you the video shortly. But it seems that the really deep vet of Palin started after her selection was announced." Live, from the convention floor.

2. I'm sure that's true
because we were all caught as off guard as everybody else. Sarah's been saying for months now that she was flattered by the national attention she was getting but that she had no intention of leaving Alaska to run for VP. We're all just stunned.

10. its a 'mavrick' move and besides, he's the "decider"
I've been saying from the start that his vetting team gave him their recommendation and he said, 'thanks for all your hard work but I've made my decision....."

after all, he was a POW ya know.

11. The McCain-Palin story has been extremely bizarre, right from the start.
This is the strangest presidential campaign I've ever experienced. McCain now appears to be totally off his rocker. And they're vetting Gidget after she is announced and we start to dig stuff up? This is just crazy.

34. No kidding
They could have just looked at the single fact that there was a bipartisan investigation going on, realized she was square in the middle of a scandal, and moved on.

Picked any one of a number of stronger and actually qualified vps - plenty of women repubs would have fit that bill, ones that would have appealed to the crowd whose votes he was trying to buy, without an ongoing scandal and this big fat old unknown factor that is just whip sawing him now.

Wonder who he truly wanted that was so bad they had to pick this gal to do the Mier root so when the VP nom is truly annouced everyone are breathing a sigh of relief.

19. Can anybody think f a way McCain comes out ahead on this?
I think the only option he has at this point is to stick with her and hope she gets a sympathy vote as a martyr.

If he ditches her, that goes straight to his judgment, and his knee-jerk personality, which have been big vulnerabilities all along.

Is there some scenario where he names Romney or somebody mainstream and people jump to McCain's support out of relief? I have trouble seeing that happening as long as Obama and Biden are steering a solid course.

Could he replace Palin with a more well-known woman like Snowe, Whittman, or Hutchinson and come out ahead with women? This seems like such a gimmick, that I can't see it working. If he wants to try that, he'd better do it fast.

20. hail mary pass
Minn papers suggest Pawlenty and his staff were led to believe he was the pick. He was supposed to be notifed Thursday evening, and was going to let his staff know Thursday evening. Instead, he didn't get the call until sometime after 1am Friday morning. He and his staff were totally floored.

After Obama's speech they knew they were toast. The big Hillary takeover was all in their heads. The parthenon turned into the roman coliseum.

So they took a rookie they were grooming of '12 and threw her into the ring. And now they're now getting to watch their hail mary pass get go up in flames.

McCain just crashed another plane!!!! Effing morons.

31. This makes no sense. You don't vet after the fact..
Either this means they may dump her or they are accessing the situation and preparing for damage control or trying to kill some the stories -- payoffs, paper trail shredding, etc. Regardless this is not good for McCain especially during convention week.

Palin is a joke and a catastrophe. Expect adults to step in and try to cut the losses. Prediction: Palin steps down for sake of her family. Veep 2 can be anybody. Rudi? Surrogates start pushing Wright, Ayers, etc. Bush manufactures an international crisis. McCain declares "We are all Lower Slobovians."

33. this confirms that McCain made the decision himself
Now, the GOP Illuminati (relax, it's pejorative) are moving in to "vet." When they "vet," they also scrub records, make evidence disappear, woodshed witnesses, and plant diversionary stories.
