The Swifty Boat smear was horrible. Bush's speeches are moving into his crazed bully boy mode. Iraq's going downhill. The economy shows terrible statistics.

You'd think with all of that and more, Bush would be plummeting. Instead he is on an upswing.

I am bewildered. It seems the worse Bush gets and the more he wrecks the country, the more people like it.

Is this my imagination? I hope so.

1. Don't pay attention to the polls--they don't count "likely voters"
"Likely voters" are those who didn't vote last presidential election.

There will be a LOT of people voting this time (newly registered voters and the newly motivated already registered voters).

Polls don't reflect that.

2. They have to be manipulating the polls and the media. That's the only
answer to that question.

7. I don't know
My faith in the American people is steadily sinking.

This idiot should be struggling to stay above 40 percent at least.

13. I figure about 40 percent are complete idiots..
That leave 60 percent between those who have a full brain and those who at least have enough of a brain to see through GOP BS.

Maybe I need to revise that to a more misanthropic direction.

10. I don't trust the media in the least
I think a lot of this "upswing" is a result of the media whores' pronouncements and 2-minute memory spans. But there's got to be something to it.

But it's absolutely mind boggling. It seems so patently obvious this guy is not fit to be president. The country has gone downhill since 2000.

Maybe Americans are masochists.

9. He doesn't become "more popular" His supporters just scream louder
they become more vocal and more nasty. This make you think that there are more of them.

14. Do not read too much into polls.. it's early days yet

and they are only counting likely voters. Debates would be important as well.

As to why 50% like Bush (and sadly some of them are otherwise intelligent, educated and nice folks) -

1) they think his Christian faith is bigger than Kerry's and that's very important

2) they think he will kick the ass of the rest of the world better

3) they think kicking everyone else's ass is the only way to maintain US superpower status

4) they think dems will take away more of their money from them

5) they think if US maintains superpower status (3) and republicans lower taxes (4), their lives will automatically be much better

6) they think dems are too much into bed with the " special groups" like blacks and women - about 67% of US population.

7) they think everyone who is not like them is out to get them and evil. Only the republicans can save them from commies/terrorists/feminazies/godless liberals.

8) they think social, economic and political issues and policies are none of their business, they should just focus on acquiring wealth, consuming and keeping themselves entertained. They vote republican out of reflex without even thinking through 1-7

9) education system and mass media do not help them to challenge 1-8

10)education system and mass media do everything to reinforce 1-8

15. Your summation is accurate
But alas, it only reinforces my point. How can so many people be so deluded?

16. a number one fear...
....is the fear of losing white majority in America. This fear runs very deep but simmers just under the surface. While Bush hasn't satisfied the right on immigration issues, they think a Dem will do worse by their standards.

18. It's weird, but nobody I encounter likes him
In the people I run across during a week, I have yet to meet someone in the last year who doesn't roll their eyes when Bush's name enters the conversation.

I'm not just talking about people you'd assume to be against him. It's old and young and all variations of class and lifestyle.

Even the most hardcore conservative I know admits he doesn't have much use for him.

Admittedly I live in the center of Blueville, but still, the widespread and marked dislike of Bush is surprisingly universal.

I just don't get why any "swing voter" would swing for four more years of this.
