Tens of Thousands?
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 10:08 AM by Bad Thoughts
Did I just hear CNN report that the number of New York protests were in the tens of thousands, not the hundreds of thousands? I am really sick of this network diminishing the accomplishments and determination of progressives to the American public.

1. Well, technically there were tens of thousands.
You know, as in fifty tens of thousands. So it's not a lie, per say.

But as soon as we have to listen to what the media reports and use phrases like, "it's not a lie, per say," well. . . we are fucked.

2. Heck Im surpirsed they didn't say "dozens"

5. Manhattan Nation!
By the time we got to Manhattan, we were half a million strong

...
By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and a celebration.
And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes
Riding shotgun in the sky,
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We caught in the devil's bargain,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

I always loved that line in Forbidden Planet, my third favorite scifi movie.

Sooooo, CNN is math-challenged. Their credibility is sinking faster as they continue down that Faux trail. Their change in programming and emphasis on conservative topics is/has been mistaken and short-sighted in several ways for a number of years:

1) When they were simply a news source, they were the "must see" place because there was no competition. And frankly, some of what they did was great journalism. Not all, but some.
2) When they stopped taking news seriously, and started tinkering with "news-lite", hours of fashion and celeb crap, they began a painful spiral down towards the Peephole Magazine level of edukashun.
3) When competitors appeared, first CNBC, BLoomberg, then, MSNBC and Fox, they ignored their presence with an arrogance that was greater than Dick Cheney's or Shrub's.
4) When infotainment and spin started to become entertaining (Faux in particular) they made another massive shift, going for glitz, not brains or experience. Remember the star wars, trading people and faces around trying to win celeb market share? Silly. NO, worse.
5) When Fox and others started beating them on real news stories (forget or ignore the spin, people simply quit watching them, because Fox was reporting some news, although with tons of spin) they tried yet another tactic. That is where they sit today.

Now, in desparation, they are trying to outfox fox. Won't happen. There aren't enough brain-dead, mealy-mouthed, uneducated, auto-lobotomized "morans" in the general public to support to competing, strident, ultra-neocon, right wing news channels. One, sure. Two, no way.

Worse yet, there is a major void left now - there is no real news station that concentrates on news. CNN has not figured this out yet. That is why MSNBC folks are snickering up their sleeve.
