Bush uses "us" when talking SBVT ads.
From Josh Marshall:

A nice find by Andrew Sullivan on President Bush's Freudian slip about the Swift Boat Ads ...

I loved Bush's comment yesterday about the smear-ad: "I can understand why Senator Kerry is upset with us. I wasn't so pleased with the ads that were run about me. And my call is get rid of them all, now." "Us"?? I thought Bush had nothing to do with it.

Nice catch...

Sorry in advance if this is a dupe.

1. I caught that too when I read that comment.
Bush went off script there.

2. That seals the deal.
No wonder he never repudiated the ads... and his wife Laura defended them!

5. Where exactly did he say that originally? What speech?

6. Try this alternate statement:
"I don't understand why Senator Kerry is upset with us- WE didn't make these ads."

I don't know the context of the original quote nor do I have a link.

7. I'm wondering where he said this too.
Josh usually links back to his source, in this case, Andrew Sullivan, but this time he didn't.

8. Forget the Swift Boat Ads...
...here comes the next wave of Kerry-Vietnam smearing:
http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnkerry.com

and the man behind it all:

Someone with more "creative" expertise than me should try to nip this one in the bud.

It's so beside the point that it is ludicrous.

11. Maybe a good old-fashioned character ad...
...to undo some of the residual perception from the smears that have come and will continue to come.

This from the email I sent to someone earlier today:

"I was just watching Channel 8's (Phoenix's local PBS station) coverage of the RNC and David Brooks said something about how courage is one of the most important issues in the campaign. I then had a thought that all those really really glowing and positive reviews in his military records might make for a really good ad script. This would include the comment from one of Kerry's superiors when he left the Navy that it was truly the Navy's loss, or words to that effect. ...Given that the Repubs are sure to (falsely) attack Kerry's character since they don't have a record to run on and that they have to hide their stands on most issues during campaign season, it wouldn't hurt to have another war-relevant positive character ad or two ready."

Although big false charges must be countered with facts (preferably at the time they're made, if on public forums such as talking head shows), it wouldn't hurt to flood the airwaves with credible and effusive third party praise for Kerry. I do some phone banking for the local Kerry office, and one of the indy voters I talked to last week said she was voting for Bush because of "all those revelations about Kerry coming out."

It would be good to have more people loudly pointing out that the problem is not 527s or free speech, but officially (if tacitly) sanctioned lies; something along the lines of "when faced with the opportunity to denounce lies about a war hero, George Bush chose instead to try and block/suppress free political speech. ("...which is one of the basic democratic values that America was founded upon")

(This is my first post here, so my apologies if some of this ground has already been covered.)

12. But.....
Where did Andrew Sullivan get this quote? He doesn't say. I would feel happier if we had more information on where, when, what context, to whom Bush was speaking etc, etc, etc...
