More on the dragon fire incident: Who is Black Box???....
...

Officers arrested nine people they said belonged to a group called "Black Box" in connection with the burning of a large yellow, paper dragon, set on fire at 34th Street and Seventh Avenue. Someone was holding the dragon when several people with bandanas around their faces ran up to it, doused it in gasoline and ignited it using a "flare-like smoke bomb," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

As protesters fled in panic, a group of officers wearing riot helmets and carrying night sticks poured into the streets. When police tried to arrest one man, nine others who tried to prevent his arrest were arrested on assault charges, police said.

9. hey, who knows maybe it Was deliberate...
we here realise how easy it is to confuserate and bumble-ize the free-basing faithers.

I am sure some of them will now relate BBV issues with that of the burning dragon. I kid you not.

6. If they're these guys, they're anarchists...
Statement by Black Block activists
Genoa, July 21st 2001,

by participants of the Black Block

We are speaking out for a part of the black block.

We do not want to submit helplessly into the politics of the powerful. We have come to enter militantly the red zone and to stop the g8 meeting.

Yesterday the police acted brutally against the protesters. Protesters were beaten up, were attacked with tear gas and shock bullets, they were imprisoned and tortured. The police brutality culminated in the murder of one protester.

5. Black Blocs are collections of anarchists
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 01:06 PM by goodhue
At least that's what they have been calling themselves of late. There was a Black Bloc presence in Boston.

http://www.infoshop.org/blackbloc.html

A black bloc is a collection of anarchists and anarchist affinity groups that organize together for a particular protest action. The flavor of the blackbloc changes from action to action, but the main goals are to provide solidarity in the face of a repressive police state and to convey an anarchist critique of whatever is being protested that day.

10. Funny that. Bloomberg was warning about anarchists....
and, right on schedule, anarchists set fire to a float right in front of the Fox News cameras - providing the Fox/CNN spin for the day.

12. Here's a story that explains part of it
http://us.rediff.com/news/2004/aug/30spec2.htm

I'd been walking on and off alongside a group of anarchists -- mostly gregarious folk interested in singing and dancing around a float of a large papier mache dragon -- when it became clear that many of those original marchers had been replaced by a mysterious band of masked men and women.

They wore bandanas and black ski masks, ducked behind large banners, and held black umbrellas over their heads to avoid being identified by the massive police contingent lining the route. Efforts to take photos of any of these people were met with nervousness or hostility.

Only later did it become clear that this was the beginning of an anarchist action -- what insiders call a black bloc.

Moments later, the dragon stopped moving. The crowd was directly in front of Madison Square Garden, the venue for the convention and symbolic object of the protesters' rage. ... It was then that smoke started rising up from the ears of the dragon.

I'd noticed the people with the bandannas and umbrellas walking under the dragon several minutes before the fire and wondered about it. This story doesn't explain how the black bloc replaced the original happy anarchists, but it does make a certain amount of sense of the situation.

13. Thanks...TeeYiYi posted this...
. . if they did it (Black Bloc) they'll take credit for it — complete with pictures. If they were set up they'll point that out as well.
...........
"Anarchists from around the world organized and participated in black blocs at the 2001 G8 protests in Genoa, Italy. However, the Italian police also organized a fake black bloc using undercover police officers and neo-fascists from around Europe. These fake black blocs attacked other protesters, set cars on fire, and vandalized small businesses. It is suspected that the police organized these fake blocs to drive a wedge between moderate and militant protesters. Another goal may have been to demonize anarchists as "terrorists" in the eyes of the general public."

16. another brief description . . .
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/FH31Aa03.html

It was hardly an upbeat crowd, but it was certainly a determined one. When, right in front of Madison Square Garden where the convention was scheduled to begin the next day, a giant, papier-mache green dragon was doused with gasoline and set on fire, perhaps by the small group that had been inside it - a dangerous and malicious act - and police on motorcycles, horses, and scooters as well as on foot with billy clubs at the ready and plastic handcuffs in quantity attached to their pants' legs, promptly closed in, shut the march down, made a few arrests, and looked ready to end things right there, a man near me exclaimed, "This election is the end. It's the last one. I don't think we can survive this election!" But the marchers who had not already passed the Garden waited with determination until, to shouts from the sidewalks of "Whose streets! Our streets!" the police moved aside. Then they simply marched on.
