Breaking AP; Palin went to six colleges in six years

Palin switched colleges 6 times in 6 years

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin seems to have switched colleges at least six times in six years, including two stints at the University of Idaho before graduating from there in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

''Our office was not contacted by anyone,'' said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.

According to a biography -- ''Sarah'' by Kaylene Johnson -- Palin and three friends went to the University of Hawaii at Hilo after graduation from high school in Alaska in 1982. But they left after a few weeks because of the constant rain there, the book said.

The registrar at Hawaii-Hilo has no record that she ever enrolled, school officials said Thursday.

Palin, then known as Sarah Louise Heath, and a friend then traveled to Honolulu and enrolled at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.

She was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said Thursday.

1. University of Hawaii
small freaking world...does Biden have a Hawaii story too? Palin, Obama, and McCain (met his precious there) do.

4. Can there be any better evidence that this person is a bubbleheaded flake than...

...the statement "they left after a few weeks because of the constant rain"? So much for committing to a career. So much for "staying the course." "Oooh, Trixie, my hair is getting all frizzy in this climate! Let's get out of here and go to college somewhere sunny! Where there are lots of cool boys!"

14. I'll bet there's more rain in Wasilla
Wasilla is not far from Anchorage so it's weather is probably pretty similar. It's rainy and cold there. Even if it rained while she was in Hawaii, the weather would have been a big improvement over her hometown.

Totally ruins the Valley Girl look.

11. She grew up in Alaska, so she would be used to the weather there
Most of Hawaii doesn't exactly have 4 seasons, and no snow, either, unless you can make it up to Mauna Loa. Speaking for myself, I couldn't live in Phoenix, but a lot of people seem to love it there.

9. If she didn't lie and didn't commit a crime, I think this is a non-issue
At that age, there is a certain restlessness in some people, especially if they spent most or all of their childhood inthe same place. There could be any number of reasons for changing schools at that age-- the weather sucks, the social life/student body sucks, courses aren't demanding enough, courses are too tough, out-of-state/private school tuition sucks up the money.

The focus should be on what she's been doing recently.

15. Most of us suspect that there is a lie or three somewhere in that
college history. This is the woman who lied about winning Miss Congeniality in the beauty pageant.

17. If the courses were too tough for her...
...that says something about her ability to absorb information which could affect whether she's a good president (if McCain-Palin wins and then McCain dies.)

21. Depends on what courses they were
If they were courses in subjects like political science or history, then I would agree. If they were required courses in say, zoology or calculus, I would tend to disagree.

I transferred schools and it took me over 6 years to finish but I did it! This shouldn't be held against her.

Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 08:00 PM by Canuckistanian
These ruthless high school go-getters rarely did well in college - at least not socially.

Not that they minded being the butt of jokes. Just that they were disgusted at all the other students and profs who didn't think they were amazing.

I've seen her type before.
