From the AP...McCain's Hero Aura inoculates him against critics
It inoculates him only because Americans are a war like people who put those who have fought in wars on a pedestal and act as if they can do no wrong. The Democrats fear being labeled as appeasers or weak on defense so they always laud John McCain (as if he's the only person to have ever been a POW). Yet four years ago when the Dems were running a veteran, the Republicans made fun of his service and made light of his purple heart. John Kerry did NOTHING! Do you think a repugnican would have stood by and done nothing?

I would wager that in the next election neither candidate will have served in the military and I consider that a GOOD THING. Military service, like a litmus test for religion is not a prerequisite for being president. After all the person is a PRESIDENT of ALL Americans not the COMMANDER IN CHIEF of all Americans. What previously made the US unique is that the head of the Army is a civilian and not a military man. Thus the military is answerable not to one of their own but to a civilian.

I am concerned that the constant praising of John McCain's service will obscure any criticism of how he has used the power he acquired after exploiting that service.

Why aren't the Dems bringing up Keating 5?

McCain's Hero Aura Inoculates Him against Critics

WASHINGTON (AP) -- How dare you say that about John McCain, war hero?

That, in so many words, is the line of counterattack coming from Republicans who only four years ago dismissed the war service of another decorated Vietnam veteran with his own story of bravery.

For decades, McCain was reluctant to talk about his Hanoi prison camp heroism. That reticence has vanished in the blizzard of ads, speeches and talking points before, during and surely after the convention that made him the Republican nominee.

1. Did the framers of the consitution think it was a good idea to worship the military?
I'm a little fuzzy on my history. I suppose this is a sign of every great country.

3. What act of heroism did McCain achieve?
I'm sure being in a prison camp is hellacious but what was the heroic act that McCain did?
