McCain Speech: Smothering Palin's Sizzle?

By Greg Sargent - September 4, 2008, 10:37PM
Not a lot to say about McCain's speech -- the full text is after the jump -- but how on earth did they not avoid this:

Prediction: There will be little to no bounce out of tonight; indeed, McCain's speech will smother Palin's sizzle like a wet blanket.

more

10:50 PM ... TPM Reader PT: "What are the odds Governor Palin drops McCain from the ticket? After a performance like this, it's a serious question."

10:53 PM ... I'm trying to be objective in this. But this seems pretty feeble, no? What actually surprises me is that the speech itself, not the delivery but the speech, doesn't seem that great. A lot of laundry list stuff.

10:57 PM ... They/he should have started with biography. Much more compelling than the boilerplate that made up most of the speech.

11:01 PM ... I question the wisdom of not letting anyone in the auditorium under 50.

11:02 ... Nothing brings so much happiness as betraying all the ideals you said you believed in to try to take advantage of your last chance to be president.

5. I didn't watch the speech.
Just saw a brief clip on MSNBC. He was on a blue screen. Plain blue. Isn't that asking for it? Is it possible for the campaign to be that dumb?

7. For quite a while there was a green screen
At least on the close-ups. From a distance you could see the giant American flag.

I can't believe those stupid fucks at the RNC put him in front of a green screen for the biggest speech of his life!

17. LOL (and mystery solved)
First, when I see a green screen my mind works like yours.

Second, check out TPM for the green screen mystery. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/213806.php

9. It was a green lawn of some mansion but with the closeup shot
it looked like him against a green screen. Then they switched to a corn screen (field of corn! :wtf:), then finally settled on the flag on the flag pole on the blue background, which put him against a blue screen on closeup.

CSPAN's blog monitor JUST mentioned all the comments that are going on about the green screen!!

16. I'm starting to think they really want him to lose.
How could they be so dumb, after all the Colbert green screen stuff, after the uniformly horrible reaction last time they put him on a green background? I mean, if you want to edit a fake background behind somebody, you shoot them on either a blue or green background. Every weatherman, every local news station, and every second-rate After Effects jockey knows this. They can't possibly be that dumb. Can they?

13. Did anyone happen to catch the RNC earlier tonight?
I was watching earlier tonight (on C-SPAN, the only reliable network) and after, I think it was the Tennessee senator, gave his speech, they went into an intermission. During the intermission, they played "FOOTLOOSE" and all these old white people were dancing around, being happy, and what have you... and at that point, I burst out laughing... It made me wonder how many of them have ACTUALLY SEEN Footloose and knew what the movie was about. You know... bunch of young liberals fight back at the repression of a "FAMILY VALUES" town that prohibits dancing... and win

14. Why are they still doing that old kind of setup?
They had Obama out at a podium where there were people even up in the stands behind him and you could see the evening sky above. It was gorgeous.
